Digital gates and contactless payments are transforming Welsh rail.

Digital gates and contactless payments are transforming Welsh rail. [Press Releases Entrance Control] Published 2026-04-23 Vix Technology, a leader in fare collection and intelligent transportation systems, and Gunnebo Entrance Control partnered with Transport for Wales Rail (TfWRL), the rail operations business that sits within Transport for Wales, to enable the launch of the first Pay as you Go (PAYG) contactless system on heavy rail outside of London. The tech collaborators developed new digital ticket barriers, which have been deployed across the Welsh rail network to enable simple, PAYG contactless rail travel in Wales. The rollout is transforming ticketing for thousands, recently reaching a milestone of more than two million rail journeys made using PAYG tap-on, tap-off in the year following the system's launch in November 2024. TfWRL is committed to delivering an integrated, accessible, efficient public transport network in line with the Welsh Government's strategy. To achieve this, it sought to introduce a PAYG contactless system, enabling passengers to tap-on and tap-off using a contactless EMV card or device and benefit from daily and weekly capped fares. With its ticket barriers approaching end of life, TfWRL needed a replacement solution to accept multiple digital fare media - contactless EMV cards, mobile wallets, 1D and 2D barcodes and ITSO smart cards. In addition, it wanted to maintain support for magstripe tickets. It was vital that the new gates could be installed across a range of station layouts, with minimal disruption to infrastructure and passengers. Alongside the improvements to ticketing and the convenience of PAYG, the project will also pave the way for enhanced access to real-time travel and service information through the deployment of Video Help Points (VHPs). While this functionality, configuration and development work for these assets is still to come, these features will be delivered as part of the wider customer experience improvements. Helen Mitchell, Head of Portfolios and Programmes at Transport for Wales, said, "This project is a key part of our vision to enhance the passenger experience across the Welsh rail network in a smart and sustainable way. By working with Vix Technology and Gunnebo Entrance Control, we have been able to introduce a flexible and scalable solution that meets the needs of today's travellers while ensuring future adaptability." The ticket barrier developed by Vix and Gunnebo meets TfWRL's need to support both legacy and evolving ticketing technologies. Crucially, its modular, space-efficient design is adaptable for different stations, and fits within the footprint of TfWRL's previous rail gates. As a result, the cost and impact of installation was minimised. The gates are integrated to Unicard's Ticketing Hub to process contactless payments, and to Vix's cloud-based Cast platform, to enable staff to carry out monitoring and management tasks. These include local and remote gate configuration, scheduling, real-time gate status monitoring, device management, and data analysis and reporting. The project was launched with a Proof of Concept (PoC) stage at Newport and Cardiff Central stations, allowing for real-world testing and refinements based on user feedback. Following these successful trials, it was rolled-out across 95 stations. Michael Hart, CRO at Vix Technology, said: "Vix and Gunnebo have developed a future-ready solution to support Transport for Wales' long-term objectives, including streamlined revenue collection, reduced fare evasion and smoother passenger journeys. We're excited to see this solution paving the way for a fully integrated transport ticketing network." Mark Geering, Business Development Director at Gunnebo Entrance Control, added: "This partnership has set a new standard for ticketing in the UK rail sector. Gunnebo Group is proud to support Transport for Wales' vision for a modern, passenger-friendly railway. Its collaboration with Vix has resulted in a robust and flexible ticketing solution that not only meets current demands but is also designed for future advancements." Vix Technology joins national working group to help define the UK's first Bus Stop Standard

Vix Technology joins national working group to help define the uk's first Bus Stop Standard. Vix Technology has joined forces with Campaign for Better Transport to shape a consistent national approach to bus stop infrastructure and passenger information. As a project partner of its Better Bus Stops initiative, Vix will be part of a working group involved in developing a national bus stop standard. Participants include the Department for Transport (DfT), local transport authorities, operators, accessibility specialists, and other technology partners. Raising the standard for every stop According to research cited in the report, Better Bus Stops: Creating a National Bus Stop Standard (Campaign for Better Transport, 2024), 56% of people say they would use buses more often if stops offered real-time information, and 47% would do so if stops were clean, comfortable, and weather-protected. Building on these findings, the working group will create guidance for local authorities on the design, accessibility, and information provision of bus stops. The goal is to deliver a clear and consistent standard that improves bus usability for passengers - and helps local authorities prioritise investment in the stops that matter most. Michael Solomon Williams, Head of Campaigns at Campaign for Better Transport, said: "Buses connect communities and bring millions together on a daily basis. Its report highlighted how important bus stops are - how they improve people's experience of bus travel, and help boost passenger numbers. "Whilst there is plenty of good practice, there are also too many poorly managed bus stops, lacking basic information to give people confidence to catch the bus. Vix Technology Group want to change this by using real people's voices and experiences to push for a national standard for bus stops. "There already exists a national standard for railway stations and for information on board buses, so why not at bus stops too?" The working group's priorities include: * Defining the core elements and minimum requirements for bus stops * Embedding accessibility, sustainability and digital connectivity into design * Supporting the rollout of real-time information and open data integration * Advising on procurement models, implementation pathways, and local delivery Bringing technology expertise to the table Vix's role will be to bring deep experience in passenger information systems, real-time data, and connected infrastructure to ensure the new standard provides a flexible and future-ready pathway for improvement for local authorities to deliver. Vix's input will focus on: * Digital integration - supporting open standards for real-time information * Operational efficiency - advising on cost-effective deployment and maintenance * User experience - ensuring information is accessible and reliable for passengers Matthew Wilks, Business Development Director at Vix, said: "Creating a national bus stop standard is a crucial step in improving the quality and consistency of bus travel. Reliable, accessible information at every stop gives passengers confidence in public transport and helps make buses the natural choice for everyday journeys. We're proud to bring our technology expertise to support this important work." Collaborating for long-term change The national bus stop standard working group's upcoming sessions will focus on progressing policy development and local implementation. Outputs will include guidance and toolkits for local authorities, case studies of good practice, and recommendations for integrating digital information and maintenance standards. The initiative supports the government's wider ambitions to boost bus ridership, improve accessibility, and decarbonise transport through investment in high-quality, user-centred infrastructure. Editor's notes A survey of bus users was undertaken as part of Campaign for Better Transport's report, Better Bus Stops: Creating a National Bus Stop Standard.
