The Wikimedia Foundation runs Wikipedia and the family of Wikimedia free-knowledge projects as a nonprofit organization. It supports reading, contributing, and sharing content through software experiences and community programs, funded by donations from individuals and institutional grants. Its products work by letting volunteers write and edit articles, and readers access them for free through web and mobile experiences that prioritize openness and collaboration. Unlike for-profit tech platforms, Wikimedia focuses on free knowledge for everyone and backs the volunteer communities who create it, along with advocacy for policies that enable free knowledge to thrive. Its goal is a world in which every person can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.
