Wizards of the Coast unveiled a major expansion of Dungeons & Dragons at Gen Con 2026, introducing the Universes Beyond initiative. The company announced D&D: World of Warcraft, launching 17 November 2026 in partnership with Blizzard Entertainment, marking Warcraft's first tabletop return in two decades. A Star Wars collaboration will debut in 2027, alongside the return of the Dark Sun setting. The company launched D&D Icons, a creative programme led by Joe Manganiello bringing back legendary creators including Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, and Luke Gygax to work on classic settings like Dragonlance. Additional announcements included new Greyhawk content, the Warlock video game featuring Tasha, and a redesigned D&D Beyond mobile app launching early 2027. Wizards also introduced a partnership programme with tabletop studios for annual support of iconic campaign settings.
Wizards of the Coast president John Hight is stepping down on September 1, just two years after taking the role. According to a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the company has begun searching for his replacement. Hight's tenure saw the transition to Dungeons & Dragons 5.5 edition and a major push for Magic: The Gathering's Universes Beyond crossover initiative. While some partnerships proved popular, the overall strategy has divided the gaming community. Hight will remain with Wizards in an advisory capacity. The company emphasised that Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons continue performing well, and upcoming video game releases including Exodus and Warlock remain on schedule. The leadership change comes as parent company Hasbro recently reported a $56 million loss on cancelled games.
Hasbro shares surged 8% after the company beat fourth-quarter profit estimates and issued upbeat 2026 guidance, driven by explosive growth in its digital gaming division. Sales at Wizards of the Coast, which includes Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering, jumped 86% year-on-year with materially improved operating margins. CEO Chris Cocks attributed the success to community building and authentic human connection through gaming. The company expects continued top-line growth and margin expansion, supported by aggressive cost-cutting and new toy releases tied to upcoming Disney films like Toy Story 5. Jefferies analyst Kylie Cohu raised his price target by 24% to $120, calling Hasbro "the most compelling idea" in toy coverage. Cocks noted the toy industry has bottomed out after three years of decline.
