Ask what kind of work you want to do, creative (content, design), analytical (SEO, ads), or strategic (product or brand marketing). If you're not sure, pick a generalist marketing role at a smaller company to get exposure to everything.
Both. Show that you're capable (through past work or personal projects), but also curious. Marketing teams love candidates who come in with ideas and questions, not just a list of what they’ve already done.
If you like storytelling, data, design, and working across teams, marketing’s a great fit. If you're unsure, try an internship in product, growth, or business development first, those give you exposure to marketing while keeping other doors open.
If you dread writing, dislike cross-functional work, or avoid ambiguity, marketing may feel draining. It’s fast-paced, results-driven, and often undefined. If you thrive with clear structure and deep technical work, you might prefer roles in ops or product instead.
Start with Google Analytics, Canva, and basic Excel. Learn the basics of social media platforms, email marketing tools (like Mailchimp or Klaviyo), and SEO tools (like Ahrefs or SEMrush).
Include 2–3 short case studies, even if they’re from class or side projects. Show campaigns, content pieces, or social media posts, and explain why you made specific choices and what the results were.
