The category includes private companies at different points in their development: some still operate with small, fluid teams, while others have global departments, specialized roles, and university recruiting that resembles a large public company. Entry can come through a formal graduate cohort with fixed start dates and training or through a direct hire into a standing team. Cohorts may provide peers, planned onboarding, and rotations; direct roles can offer faster immersion but depend more heavily on the manager and existing team. Internships, projects, technical work, and customer or operating experience often matter even when full-time experience is limited. Valuation is not a complete measure of stability, role quality, or future reward. Examine the company's funding and maturity only as context, then compare team size, reporting line, product stage, function, pace, and expected ownership. A unicorn is a private company valued at a billion dollars or more. The label says something about scale and investor confidence, not about profitability, culture, or job security. Plenty of unicorns are still losing money, and a valuation set in one funding climate can be revised down later. What it usefully signals for an intern is stage. A unicorn is past the survival phase, generally has hundreds to thousands of employees, a real product with real customers, and enough structure to run an internship program. That places it between an early-stage startup, where you may be the only intern, and a public technology company with a long-established program.
The companies on this list span several industries, which is the point of researching them as a group. In defense and aerospace, Anduril, SpaceX, Shield AI, and Applied Intuition hire engineering and operations interns. In financial technology, Stripe, Brex, Circle, and Checkout.com. In data and AI infrastructure, Databricks and Scale AI. In consumer and product software, Figma, Canva, Reddit, Roblox, Notion, and Rippling. In transport and logistics, Rivian and Gopuff. Not every company runs an intern program every year, and teams within one company differ, so treat this as a research map rather than a list of current openings and check each careers page directly.
It usually sits between the two. Compared with a large public technology company, expect a smaller group of interns, less formal programming, a manager with more discretion over your project, and work that is more likely to ship during your term. Compared with a very early startup, expect more structure, an actual onboarding process, established engineering practice, and a materially better-defined path to a return offer. The tradeoff against big tech is predictability, and the tradeoff against early-stage is ownership. Which is better depends on whether you want a recognizable brand and a well-run program or more responsibility and a closer view of how a company operates.
Software engineering is the largest category, but the range is wider than most candidates assume, because these are companies with hundreds of employees and complete functional teams. Common intern roles include data science and analytics, product management, product and brand design, hardware and mechanical engineering at the defense and mobility companies, security, IT, finance, recruiting, marketing, and business operations. Non-engineering internships are often less competitive simply because fewer students apply to them. Because these companies grow unevenly, the roles they open vary sharply year to year, so search by function rather than assuming a program exists.
At most well-known unicorns, yes. Intern pay at this stage is generally in the same range as large technology companies, because they compete for the same candidates. The variation shows up in the surrounding package. Housing stipends, relocation, and structured intern events are common at the larger and better-funded companies and inconsistent at the rest. Equity is essentially never part of an intern offer, so the cash rate is the offer. Pay also varies by function, and engineering and data roles typically pay more than operations, marketing, or recruiting internships at the same company. Ask about the rate, hours, and any housing support before accepting.
Most are in person or hybrid, and more so than at large technology companies. These teams tend to be concentrated in one or two offices, most often San Francisco and New York, with real clusters in Seattle, Austin, and Los Angeles. Many prefer interns on site because the program is short and onboarding is informal. Hardware, defense, and manufacturing roles are effectively always on site. Fully remote internships do exist, particularly at companies that were remote-first from the start, but they are the exception. Check the location line before applying, and factor housing costs into any offer in an expensive city.
Evidence that you can build and ship, more than credentials. These teams are small enough that a hiring manager usually reads your resume personally, which works in your favor if you have something concrete: a project with real users, a meaningful open-source contribution, prior internship work you can describe in specifics, or a technical writeup. Coursework alone rarely differentiates. Because unicorns hire in bursts tied to funding and growth, timing matters as much as strength, and a strong candidate applying to a team with no budget will not get a reply. Applying early and showing genuine familiarity with the product both measurably help.
More variable than at large technology companies, which convert a substantial share of interns through an established process. At unicorns, conversion depends heavily on whether the team has a full-time opening when your term ends, and that is a function of the company's growth and funding rather than your performance. Some run formal conversion pipelines and others decide case by case. The upside is that a strong intern on a small team is highly visible to the person who makes the decision. Ask during interviews how many interns the team converted recently, and raise it again at the midpoint of your term.
Usually yes for US internships, though it depends more on your school than the company. F-1 students typically use Curricular Practical Training, or CPT, which your university authorizes and which requires the internship to relate to your field of study. The employer's role is mostly confirming the offer details. Companies at this stage generally have the legal and HR capacity to handle this routinely, unlike very early startups. Defense and aerospace companies are a real exception, because export control rules restrict who can work on certain technology, and many roles there require US citizenship. Check that first.
