Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.
  • A California Registered Nurse license is required at hire.
  • A minimum of 3 years of Emergency, Critical Care, or Trauma experience is required.
  • Emergency Nurse Pediatric Care certification is required within 180 days of hire.
  • Trauma Certified Registered Nurse certification is required within 180 days of hire.
  • Integrative Agitation Management certification is required within 30 days of hire.
  • Working knowledge of the California Nurse Practice Act, The Joint Commission rules and regulations, Nursing Quality Indicators, evidence-based best practices, nursing documentation, and the American College of Surgeons Orange Book is required.
  • Ability to communicate and educate in one-on-one and group presentation settings and create educational materials and competencies using computer applications is required.
  • Experience exercising initiative, creativity, resourcefulness, and flexibility in educating hospital staff about hospital objectives and strategic plans is required.
  • Ability to research, interpret, and analyze data from hospital-specific applications and produce process-improvement solutions is required.
  • Advanced skills in data reporting and data modeling using Microsoft Office Suite applications and other data management software are required.
  • Ability to carry out and present research projects is required.
  • Ability to work effectively with physicians, management, and patient care staff on special projects and auditing is required.
  • Strong leadership, compassion, and bedside nursing skills are required.
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical record nursing documentation is required.
  • The employee must demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide care or service appropriate to patients across all listed age groups, from infants through late late adults.
  • The position requires access to and use of protected health information to perform its duties.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor trauma patients from pre-hospital care through discharge to facilitate continuity, appropriateness of care, and process improvement.
  • Interact with patients and families to facilitate communication with the Trauma Care Team about trauma care issues and discharge planning.
  • Collect and analyze data through concurrent monitoring and chart abstraction.
  • Monitor trauma care, identify problems and trends, and deliver recommendations, projects, and action plans to improve processes.
  • Ensure compliance with Trauma Performance Improvement and the Patient Safety Program and prepare and present materials to the Trauma Committee.
  • Independently identify patient-care or trauma-system problems, report them to the trauma program and manager, and participate in collaborative problem resolution.
  • Conduct or coordinate post-trauma resuscitation critiques with the trauma program manager to evaluate care delivery and identify barriers to efficient trauma care.
  • Provide staff follow-up on identified concerns and problems.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case reviews.
  • Attend the Hospital-wide Performance Improvement Committee and report on projects.
  • Attend the trauma performance improvement committee and all meetings related to trauma.
  • Identify trauma patients presenting to the Emergency Department, admitted for inpatient care, transferred in or out, and trauma-related deaths on a daily basis.
  • Develop review criteria and perform concurrent or retrospective chart reviews and abstractions for patients with traumatic or other designated diagnoses.
  • Conduct concurrent reviews of trauma patients’ charts for medical necessity of procedures and appropriate prescribed treatment, identify potential medical and nursing issues, and report problems to the trauma program manager.
  • Refer performance-improvement issues and concerning chart reviews to the trauma program manager and trauma medical director for review and peer evaluation.
  • Perform concurrent and retrospective patient-record reviews with the trauma program manager and analyze data using established trauma-indicator criteria.
  • Identify trends, profiles, and patterns.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining standards, policies, procedures, protocols, performance-improvement activities, and evaluations of action-plan effectiveness for the Trauma Program.
  • Participate in the TQIP program and meetings.
  • Participate in county and regional meetings as needed.
  • Attend appropriate training seminars and conferences to maintain current field knowledge.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master of Science in Nursing is preferred.
  • At least 1 year of performance-improvement experience is preferred.
