Requirements
  • Hands-on experience formulating and solving real optimization problems using linear programming, mixed-integer programming, heuristics, network flows, or simulation beyond coursework alone.
  • Professional software engineering practice in Python or a comparable language, including version control, testing, and code review.
  • Exposure to at least one commercial or open-source solver through a modeling layer, such as Gurobi, CPLEX, OR-Tools, Pyomo, or JuMP, or clear evidence of the ability to learn this quickly.
  • A critical, hands-on approach to artificial intelligence and large language model coding tools, including the ability to use them and explain where they have gone wrong.
Responsibilities
  • Formulate inventory, routing, network design, planning, and capacity decisions as linear programming, mixed-integer programming, network flow, heuristic, or simulation models, while stating and defending assumptions.
  • Diagnose and improve slow or infeasible optimization models by tightening formulations and applying valid inequalities, warm starts, decomposition, or heuristics as appropriate.
  • Write clean, tested, production-grade Python or the team's comparable language against solvers and modeling layers, and take models from prototype toward reliable, monitored production use.
  • Use artificial intelligence, large language model, and agentic tooling as build accelerators and, where relevant, help design, evaluate, and guardrail them inside algorithmic pipelines.
  • Connect each model to the business decision it serves, including service levels, lead times, and plan stability, and recognize when an optimal plan is operationally useless.
  • Explain formulations, trade-offs, and results clearly to technical and non-technical audiences and incorporate feedback.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior exposure to supply chain or a comparable operational-decision domain, such as inventory, transportation, planning, or network design.
  • A track record of work at real scale involving large problem instances, meaningful SKU, location, or order volumes, or live production traffic rather than only academic or proof-of-concept work.
  • Experience shipping something that remained in production and was depended upon by others, including monitoring and iteration rather than only handing off a prototype.
  • A self-initiated project or improvement driven end-to-end without being asked.
  • A novel formulation, technique, framework, paper, patent, or open-source contribution that measurably improved on the prior approach.
  • Background at a company or lab conducting optimization, supply chain, or algorithmic decisioning at scale, including logistics, e-commerce, ride-hailing, marketplaces, manufacturing, operations-research-heavy technology, or a strong research group.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Black Swan still markets Lyric as a luxury short-term rental brand in 2026.
  • The 2019 Airbnb-led $160 million round validated premium demand and investor interest.
  • Reused trademarks and operational data reduce startup friction versus a fresh hospitality launch.

What critics are saying

  • Lyric shut down rental operations in 2020, proving the original model failed.
  • No clear 2026 property rollout exists, signaling weak execution after Black Swan's relaunch.
  • Airbnb and hotels compress margins; another stalled launch destroys brand credibility entirely.

What makes Lyric unique

  • Black Swan bought Lyric's brand, trademarks, data, and lyric.com in 2023.
  • Lyric targets Class A multifamily conversions with hotel-like amenities and design.
  • Black Swan ties Lyric to asset management, not venture burn and consumer marketing.
