Requirements
  • A high school diploma and at least two years of college laboratory science courses plus one year of college mathematics or computer courses, or a high school diploma and two years of clinical laboratory experience, or a high school diploma and successful completion of a Lab Assistant Training program including clinical laboratory experience.
  • The position requires flexible scheduling, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and may require work at multiple laboratory or hospital sites.
  • The position involves exposure to blood and body fluids, chemical hazards, and radiation; work in a noisy and crowded environment; prolonged use of gloves and other personal protective equipment; and temperature fluctuations.
Responsibilities
  • Perform accessioning and data entry for specimens received for pathology diagnosis.
  • Receive samples, verify requisitions and labels, triage specimens, log them according to policy, document specimens sent elsewhere, and resolve missing or illegible information with referring locations.
  • Follow up on apparently missing specimens and create or send correct account and visit numbers while entering complete and accurate specimen details.
  • Create billing accounts in HMS for specimens received from outside OHSU.
  • Label request forms, specimen containers, and slides accurately.
  • Accession and triage all received specimens in a timely manner.
  • Obtain approval and communicate with appropriate team members for same-day and weekend or holiday rush processing.
  • Notify appropriate personnel when priority specimens, including frozen sections and rush requests, are received.
  • Recognize unusual, questionable, or lost specimens and seek assistance through resolution.
  • Provide clear and effective communication to physicians, nurses, employees, outside clients, and patients.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor, including under stress.
  • Maintain orderly progression of specimens to the gross room and orderly specimen storage cabinets.
  • Preserve samples and hardware and coordinate requests to return them to patients, research coordinators, and legal firms.
  • Retrieve and transport cassettes from the grossing area, place them in numerical order, load them into the tissue processor, and provide photo documentation for quality control.
  • Set up, load, and start tissue processors at the end of the shift.
  • Communicate with gross room personnel regarding fixation and holdover specimens and provide worklist updates.
  • Coordinate special-disposition requests with the Decedent Affairs Coordinator.
  • Prepare, stain, and coverslip cytology and surgical samples.
  • Label slides with computer-generated labels as needed.
  • Reconcile slides with worklists and distribute them according to laboratory protocols.
  • Retrieve blocks and coordinate worklists for tests ordered in the laboratory information system.
  • Retrieve blocks for cutting control slides and maintain a supply of controls ready for use.
  • Organize and file slides, blocks, and reports on site and at remote locations, and prepare materials for archiving.
  • Pull slides and reports for weekly conferences.
  • Prepare materials for send-out and research requests.
  • Store or return consult slides.
  • Discard tissue according to standard procedures while maintaining adequate storage space.
  • Maintain supply inventory for all Surgical Pathology sections.
  • Order and receive supplies and document supply orders according to established procedures.
  • Prepare formalin, bulk reagents, and other solutions or reagents as needed.
  • Monitor temperature-dependent equipment, investigate temperatures outside required standards, and notify the lead worker.
  • Assist with equipment inventory recording and documentation.
  • Operate and perform daily maintenance on multiple instruments and pieces of equipment.
  • Prepare, label, and package electron microscopy and immunofluorescence fixatives for send-out.
  • Operate recycling equipment, perform quality control, and prepare reagents for reuse or disposal.
  • Maintain cleanliness of frozen-section stations and change staining solutions daily.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in a clinical or pathology laboratory setting, including specimen handling, histology information system and laboratory information system data entry, billing, telephone work, and other data entry.
