Requirements
  • A valid and recognized Journeyperson Electrician Certificate is required.
  • At least 5 years of work experience as an electrician, including at least 2 years working in substations, is required.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code with British Columbia amendments, Technical Safety BC requirements, and WorkSafeBC occupational health and safety regulations as they relate to electrical and utility work is required.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's licence or equivalent with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • Candidates must be able to work comfortably at heights, out of town, in remote locations, and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Candidates must be able to work safely with respect to environmental, health, and safety issues in the workplace.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and criminal and general background checks.
Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance, upgrading, and installation of equipment in 13.8 kV to 500 kV substations.
  • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, and electrical code specifications.
  • Plan the layout and illustration of electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures based on specifications.
  • Inspect electrical systems, components, and equipment to identify defects and ensure compliance with codes.
  • Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electrical systems, faulty equipment, and apparatus, including transformers, circuit breakers, switches, switchgear, instrument transformers, and relays.
  • Install structural steel and buried utilities.
  • Operate construction equipment such as skid steers, mini hoes, manlifts, and zoom booms.
  • Comply with company health and safety policies, the Health and Safety Manual, industry safety regulations, safe work procedures, and applicable permits and inspections.
  • Provide technical leadership, supervision, mentoring, and training to electrical apprentices, and assist them with substation construction activities.
  • Inspect and test high-voltage electrical equipment installed in substations and ensure test and maintenance reports are completed and maintained.
  • Lead installation and facilitate planning of ground grids, assembly of power system equipment, cabling, and wiring.
  • Ensure electrical work complies with Technical Safety BC requirements and company standards.
Desired Qualifications
  • PSSP/WPP, Cat 5, or equivalent training and certifications.
  • Experience with BC Hydro or utility-related work.
  • High-voltage experience.
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, and computer-based test equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills, including the ability to work within strict deadlines.
