Requirements
  • An associate degree in Health Information Technology or a bachelor's degree in Health Information Administration is required, with three years of coding experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Successful completion of a coding certification such as an American Health Information Management Association accreditation examination for Registered Health Information Administrator, Registered Health Information Technician, Certified Coding Specialist, or Certified Professional Coder is required.
  • Knowledge of International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification and International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification is required.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills are required.
  • Excellent communication skills are required.
  • Excellent customer service skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Support priorities assigned by the Manager or Assistant Manager, act as a resource to staff, interpret direction, provide guidance, maintain relevant knowledge, function as the department leader in the absence of a supervisor or manager, understand abstract coding workflows, resolve coding charge reviews and claim edits, and resolve coding denials.
  • Identify and escalate coding issues and trends to management, recommend coding workflow solutions to resolve issues and improve operations, and facilitate staff training on new processes or identified quality issues.
  • Retain coding assignments in the respective area and maintain productivity and accuracy standards in the coder's own work product.
  • Provide performance feedback about staff to supervisors and managers and keep management informed of process changes and impacts to staff.
  • Cultivate and maintain professional relationships with primary customers within the area of responsibility and across the organization to support revenue enhancement, customer service, learning, and development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Certification in Professional Fee Coding through AAPC or AHIMA.
  • Strong working knowledge of professional billing software applications.
  • Ability to type 25 words per minute.
