Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Paper Chemistry from an accredited university
  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Paper Chemistry from an accredited university (if applicable)
  • 15+ years of relevant experience in pulp and paper engineering
  • Professional Engineering registration (preferred)
  • Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment
  • Ability to create accurate process documents from vendor equipment drawings
  • Ability to develop process and equipment specifications
  • Ability to accurately estimate completion of assigned tasks
  • Ability to develop a project cost estimate, a detailed engineering schedule and a man-hour budget for a small project or an area for a larger project
  • Develop design criteria and scope of work
  • Ability to develop Process and Instrument Diagrams (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams)
  • Experience estimating and scheduling professional service hours and assessing the progress and quality of process work
  • Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards
  • Knowledge of CAD software such as AutoCAD and/or Microstation
  • Working knowledge of process simulation software such as WinGEMS and CADSIM or ability to gain the skills to work with the software
  • Ability to calculate pressure and flow for systems used in the Pulp and Paper industry
  • Ability to lead teams to deliver on commitments
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Physical ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods; climb stairs and ladders; work extended hours in a mill environment
Responsibilities
  • Leading the development of early project scopes, designs, estimates, and cost tracking
  • Overseeing engineering deliverables and ensuring high standards across drawings, specifications, and calculations
  • Producing conceptual layouts, process simulations, and detailed engineering studies including mill mass balances and debottlenecking
  • Applying safety-driven design thinking and industry codes throughout project execution
  • Promoting a culture of working safely and applying safety related concepts into process design
  • Reviewing and approving all process deliverables
  • Validating professional service and construction estimates at the beginning of a project, and tracking changes as the project progresses
  • Producing professional service estimates in accordance with department standards for project deliverables, project studies and estimates, change notices and for development of new work through proposal efforts
  • Establishing the design criteria, incorporating client requirements, estimate and/or scope basis and design basis meeting applicable standards and codes; ensuring permitting requirements are established and communicated
  • Developing project engineering standards and specifications
  • Knowing the scope and deliverables and initiating timely change notices when deviation from scope affects schedule, deliverables or cost
  • Planning and organizing the work of the team and communicating plans to the project leadership team and client
  • Maintaining control of the project by tracking budget progress, schedule commitments, and quality standards and utilizing project tools for project control
  • Delegating work to engineers and designers based on skills and experience and following up for support to ensure progress and quality
  • Consulting with design leaders from other disciplines and following up for support to ensure efficiency
  • Producing estimate level preliminary designs and material take-offs suitable for the level of estimate
  • Developing conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine simplest, most efficient approach
  • Familiarity with and utilization of industry design and engineering standards
  • Producing detailed design calculations and sketches, well organized for checking and use by drafters/designers
  • Producing project designs with efficient use of construction materials and ensuring client expectations are met
  • Checking calculations, reports and studies produced by other engineers for accuracy and conformance
  • Producing engineering and equipment specifications
  • Monitoring drawings in progress to ensure conformance to design calculations and specifications
  • Assisting drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems and providing sufficient sketches for completion of engineering drawings
  • Reviewing and checking vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for process input
  • Producing bid packages for procurement of materials or subcontract pricing
  • Participating in training programs and professional development of staff
  • Participating in professional society meetings to keep current with industry developments
  • Participating in sales activities including pre-bid meetings, client presentations, scope review meetings, and proposal development
  • Traveling as required for client presentations and project tasks
  • Mentoring less experienced process engineers
  • Reviewing resumes, conducting interviews, and completing interview evaluations for process engineering candidates
Desired Qualifications
  • Professional Engineering registration (highly preferred)
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Microstation
  • Familiarity with WinGEMS and CADSIM or ability to gain skills in these tools
  • Experience in leading pulp and paper projects and debottlenecking experience
  • Ability to develop Process and Instrument Diagrams (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) if not already listed
  • Ability to develop a project cost estimate, schedule and labor budget for large projects
