10 reasons shoppers call Walgreens the worst drugstore ever. These common complaints might have you switching pharmacies. Updated Aug. 25, 2026 Fact checked Walgreens used to be one of the most trusted names in drugstores. Founded in 1901, the chain has been hugely successful, but lately, it seems like it's constantly in the news, and it's not good news. Even loyal shoppers who enjoyed saving money on essentials are jumping ship in search of better service and fewer headaches. Walgreens might still have some convenient locations and satisfied customers, but these days, the compliments are outweighed by the complaints. Sure, no drugstore is perfect. But when basic services like prescriptions and store hours aren't reliable, it's hard to stay loyal. Here are some of the top reasons Walgreens is losing customers' trust. Video Muted Long wait times for prescriptions. Waiting for a prescription at Walgreens can test your patience. Many customers report long lines and delays of hours or even days due to understaffing or a lack of supply. That's frustrating enough, but when you're sick or in pain, whether it's short-lived or a chronic condition, delays aren't just inconvenient. They're unacceptable. Locked-up merchandise. Retail theft is a serious issue. Walgreens, however, has locked up so many ordinary items like shampoo, laundry detergent, and even toothpaste that it feels like shopping in a prison. If an employee were nearby, it wouldn't be so bad. But forcing customers to find staff to unlock products makes you want to ditch the cart and head over to Target, or just order from Amazon. Alleged illegal drug prescriptions. How can anyone trust a drugstore that has been accused of contributing to the opioid epidemic? Walgreens agreed to pay $350 million in a settlement for illegally dispensing millions of invalid opioid prescriptions and other drugs. The company allegedly ignored internal "red flags" and overbilled government programs, which brought on federal scrutiny and legal consequences. A pharmacy should value people's health over anything else, including profit. You May Also Like Poor customer service. Consumers frequently complain about the lack of decent customer service at Walgreens. In reviews, shoppers mention rude employees, lack of help, and trouble resolving even basic issues. Employees complain about poor staff training and dismissive behavior from management. With undertrained staff and low morale, good customer service is hit or miss. And when you're sick or stressed, the last thing you need is disrespectful staff or confusion at the counter. Pushy sales tactics at checkout. Multiple customers report harassment by cashiers asking them to apply for credit cards, join donation drives, and sign up for rewards programs. One customer complained about seven attempts in one transaction, which slowed down the line and had everyone griping. On the employee side, a staff member in training said it was "painful" to watch an employee from another store "bait" customers to sign up for a credit card. Plus, having this pressure could force you into making surprising financial mistakes and signing up for things you don't need. Understaffed stores and overworked employees. Walk into a Walgreens, and you might find a lone cashier trying to do everything: running the register, handling customer questions, and stocking shelves. Employees are stretched thin, and it shows in the long lines. One pharmacist said he works straight through 8-hour shifts with barely any time to eat. The result? An environment where nobody, not even the staff, wants to stick around. Unreliable hours and sudden closures. You know your neighborhood pharmacy is open, so you head to the store only to find the doors locked. Lately, Walgreens stores have been closing early due to staffing problems, which could be a health risk for customers relying on 24-hour service or late-night prescription pickups. Closing early isn't the only problem. Walgreens announced late last year they were closing around 1,200 stores across the U.S., leaving some communities without nearby pharmacy access. Drive-thru nightmares. Some Walgreens customers report spending hours in drive-thru lines. Some say they've waited three hours with no updates, sitting in silence and frustration. Others complain that some customers aren't just picking up prescriptions and have large orders of groceries and other items, which take time and hold up everyone in the line. Technical glitches that defeat the purpose. Walgreens' website and mobile app have had numerous complaints, including refills failing to update, multiple bank account charges for a single order, prescriptions disappearing overnight, and reward points vanishing with no explanation. Many customers say they end up visiting the store anyway, which defeats the whole convenience advantage. That's especially frustrating for older adults or those managing multiple prescriptions. Get a protection plan on all your appliances Did you know if your air conditioner stops working, your homeowner's insurance won't cover it? Same with plumbing, electrical issues, appliances, and more. Whether or not you're a new homeowner, a home warranty from Choice Home Warranty could pick up the slack where insurance falls short and protect you against surprise expenses. If a covered system in your home breaks, you can call their hotline 24/7 to get it repaired. For a limited time, you can get your first month free with a Single Payment home warranty plan. Staff overwork and cost-cutting. Employees report being overworked and undertrained, with pharmacy workflows focused on speed rather than safety. Following a $1 billion cost-cutting strategy back in 2023, stores rely on minimal staffing. It's a perfect storm for burnout, errors, and unhappy customers. Walgreens isn't the only pharmacy chain facing complaints, but it might be catching the most heat. Corporate cost-cutting, technical glitches, and low staff morale have made the customer experience seem like an afterthought. Bottom line. Walgreens isn't irredeemable, far from it. In April 2025, the company launched a new PharmStart program to help pharmacy technicians earn PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy) degrees, which shows a commitment to strengthening staffing, expertise, and helping them get ahead financially. It has also pledged to improve customer experience by reducing wait times and automating tasks. It's too early to know if these changes will improve current issues, but at least they're making an effort to improve. If they stick with it, Walgreens could make a turnaround that both customers and investors desperately want to see. 2026 Award Winner Best Overall Cash Back Credit Card * Low spend threshold for its welcome offer * Cell phone protection benefit (subject to a $25 deductible) * Apply Now Intro Offer $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first 3 months Annual Fee Why Synear like it Subscribe Today Learn how to make an extra $200. The Associated Press Aug 19, 2026, 8:10 AM Walgreens, US Foods, Petco and more recognized in the inaugural class of Top Supply Chain Leaders by SPS Commerce. MINNEAPOLIS-(BUSINESS WIRE)-Aug 19, 2026- SPS Commerce (NASDAQ: SPSC), the leading intelligent supply chain network, today announced the inaugural class of its Top Supply Chain Leaders, recognizing an initial 50 operational leaders and their teams from organizations across the U.S. and Canada, including Walgreens, US Foods, Petco, Fastenal, Ace Hardware, Gordon Food Service, and Canadian Tire. The recognition celebrates leadership in driving innovation, resilience, and operational excellence across retail, grocery, and distribution. In recent years, supply chain has become one of the most visible and strategically important functions inside an organization. Yet the leaders responsible for navigating disruption, modernizing operations, transforming with AI, and strengthening customer relationships often do not get the public recognition they deserve. SPS Commerce created the "Top Supply Chain Leaders" list to close that gap. As the leading intelligent supply chain network, trusted by seven of the top ten largest retailers per NRF and over two-thirds of today's fastest growing brands by Bain & Company, SPS is uniquely positioned to highlight the retailers, brands, manufacturers, distributors, and logistics providers that are setting a high bar for future operations. "The future of supply chain won't be defined by technology alone, but by the leaders who know how to use it to solve increasingly complex business challenges," said Tony DiPaolo, General Manager of Retail at SPS Commerce. "These honorees and their teams are setting a new standard for operational excellence while helping their organizations become more resilient, collaborative, and better prepared for what's next in the Agentic AI era. We're proud to recognize these individuals whose work often happens behind the scenes but positively impacts millions of consumers every day." As AI, automation and increasingly connected trading networks transform supply chain operations, SPS Commerce believes the industry's greatest competitive advantage remains the people who successfully bring those technologies together to solve real-world operational challenges. "We are honored to be recognized by SPS Commerce alongside so many accomplished leaders across retail, grocery, and distribution," said Jeff Swiney, Director, Supply Chain & Logistics at K-VA-T Food Stores (Food City). "This acknowledgement reflects our team's commitment to building stronger partnerships, embracing innovation, and finding better ways to keep products moving for the customers and communities we serve, despite an increasingly complex business environment." The inaugural list was selected by SPS Commerce based on their demonstrated leadership, industry impact, and commitment to advancing supply chain excellence. Additional leaders will be recognized in the coming months, completing the inaugural class of Top Supply Chain Leaders for 2026, with plans to continue an annual list in subsequent years. Walgreens opens new Kent micro fulfillment center. * August 6, 2026 On July 22, Walgreens opened a new 45,000-square-foot micro-fulfillment center (MFC) in Kent, Washington. This new facility brings 85 new jobs to the greater Seattle community and will support nearly 196 Walgreens stores across the Mountain West region, including 122 in Washington alone. Washington Retail Association President & CEO, Jan Himebaugh, was on hand to welcome the state-of-the-art facility to Washington; the opening was also attended by multiple state legislators, locally elected officials, and pharmacy school representatives, demonstrating that WRA's retail members are driving technological solutions that better serve its communities. Walgreens' MFCs use innovative robotic technology in a centralized pharmacy environment to dispense and ship prescriptions to its retail stores. This helps improve efficiency, stabilize staffing and pharmacy hours, reduce workflow pain points, and free up pharmacy team members' capacity to spend more time with patients. The Kent MFC joins 13 other facilities supporting 5,400 stores across the country. These centers fulfill anywhere from four to five million prescriptions weekly, handling over 40 percent of Walgreens' total prescription volume. Share the Post: August 6, 2026
