Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Ottawa approved the deal on November 1, 2024, forcing five-year Canadian employment commitments.
  • Industrial Info reported C$60 million of capital spending through 2027 at Hamilton and Nanticoke.
  • Cliffs expects about $120 million annual cost savings from Stelco, supporting continued investment.

What critics are saying

  • Cliffs bought Stelco on November 1, 2024; integration decisions sit in Cleveland, not Hamilton.
  • Coke and finishing upgrades running through 2026 risk shutdowns, delays, and customer-service disruption.
  • If Cliffs prioritizes U.S. assets, Stelco becomes a strategic afterthought and eventual mill contraction target.

What makes Stelco unique

  • Hamilton and Nanticoke plants give Cliffs Canadian flat-rolled capacity and supply optionality.
  • Lake Erie Works remains North America's newest integrated mill, with lower-cost production economics.
  • Ontario head-office retention, mandated by Ottawa in 2024, preserves local customer and labor relationships.
