Requirements
  • Current unencumbered licensure as a registered professional nurse with the West Virginia Board of Registered Professional Nurses, or the appropriate state board where services are provided, or current multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Ability to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing within two years of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Successful completion of a state and federal criminal background check as required by the relevant department of health based on work location.
  • Knowledge of hospital and nursing policies, procedures, and the ability to practice independent judgment.
  • Physical ability to perform heavy work including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, and carrying equipment weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Visual and hearing acuity within normal range to perform clinical assessments such as checking breath sounds, bowel sounds, and apical pulses.
  • Willingness to work protracted or irregular hours and work around biohazards, infectious diseases, and electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Provide supervisory coverage to the nursing unit and other patient care areas in collaboration with the leadership team.
  • Manage personnel to ensure a clinically competent and appropriately credentialed workforce to meet patient care needs.
  • Advise the Director or Manager on staff hiring, interviewing, recruitment, and retention.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, peer reviews, and written goal setting for staff according to hospital policy.
  • Coach and counsel employees regarding job performance and professional development under the direction of the Director or Manager.
  • Make clinical decisions regarding complex situations affecting patient care, medical-legal issues, bed coordination, and unit staffing.
  • Assist staff in resolving problems that impact the delivery of patient care during off-shifts.
  • Assess immediate staffing needs through consultation with charge nurses and the House Supervisor.
  • Manage fiscal activities to ensure the availability of supplies, equipment, and human resources in a cost-effective manner.
  • Maintain communication with medical staff, patients, and other departments to identify and resolve issues.
  • Conduct daily shift rounds to assess patient and family satisfaction and implement service recovery initiatives.
  • Ensure adherence to all standards and policies set by West Virginia University Hospitals and relevant accrediting bodies for licensure and regulation.
  • Assist the Director or Manager in the timely follow-up of incident and event manager reports.
  • Oversee the orientation, training, and continuing education of departmental staff and students.
  • Participate in community outreach activities to promote positive relationships and education.
  • Engage in self-development activities including seminars, workshops, and literature reviews to maintain management skills.
