Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
  • At least 6 years of experience in financial management, accounting, or auditing is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, enterprise resource planning systems, and financial software such as Sage or COINS is required.
  • Experience with QuickBooks is important.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and communication abilities are required.
  • Experience in a service-based heating, ventilation, and air conditioning or construction industry is preferred.
  • Experience with a unionized workforce is beneficial.
  • High attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and the ability to work under pressure are required.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure all bank transactions are recorded and reconciled daily.
  • Ensure completed jobs are invoiced upon completion and harmonized sales tax returns are calculated, filed, and paid by the end of the following month.
  • Monitor accounts receivable and own timely collection.
  • Ensure supplier invoices are recorded properly to an expense or work order and suppliers are paid on time; ensure parts are charged to the correct work order or inventory.
  • Ensure weekly payroll is properly recorded and labor costs are charged to work orders at the correct absorption rate; ensure union payments are calculated and paid by the 15th of the following month.
  • Prepare monthly lists of prepaid expenses and accrued liabilities that reconcile to the general ledger.
  • Prepare a monthly list of incomplete jobs and work orders, ensuring all costs are properly recorded.
  • Ensure revenue is classified as Service, Project, or Maintenance, with associated costs reflected in the corresponding cost-of-sales categories.
  • Ensure the technician utilization report is prepared each Monday for the prior week.
  • Own and execute an accurate and consistent five-business-day monthly close.
  • Oversee profitability reporting by service line, including service, maintenance, and construction.
  • Ensure accurate labor costing, technician productivity reporting, and overhead allocation.
  • Establish and enforce internal financial policies and controls.
  • Own sales tax compliance and reporting, including preparing and filing returns on time.
  • Liaise with auditors on audits and compliance matters.
  • Manage the accounting team and lead and mentor the finance team, supporting efficiency and professional development.
  • Own the monthly work-in-progress scheduling process across active projects, ensuring costs incurred, billings to date, and estimated costs to complete are accurately tracked and reconciled to the general ledger.
