Hollywood achieved its biggest summer box office ever, generating $4.765 billion between May and Labor Day, narrowly surpassing 2013's record. However, rising ticket prices masked a significant attendance gap — theatres sold nearly 249 million fewer tickets than in 2019. Premium screenings are driving the industry's new business model. Cinemark reported that premium large-format screenings generated nearly 15% of box office revenue despite representing just 6% of auditoriums. The company's average ticket price rose 4.2% to $10.83, whilst concession revenue per patron increased to $8.70. Industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted Gen Z's distinctive taste, citing successes of both highbrow and blockbuster films. "The audience is telling you they want a mix of that cinematic fast food and cinematic fine dining", he said. Analysts project theatres can generate greater profitability from fewer ticket sales through premium experiences and tighter cost control.
