Position Description

The McGill University Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Palliative Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as an Academic Clinician, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical) based at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Pediatrics is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. The MCH is a 150-bed hospital with a 12-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, an 8-bed step down unit, a 52-bed Neonatal Intensive Care unit, and 56 pediatric inpatient beds. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH.

The clinical team, called the Pediatric Advanced Care Team (PACT), currently has 4 physicians, a nurse, a nurse practitioner, and a bereavement coordinator, with additional access to social services and spiritual care. PACT provides interdisciplinary care to infants, children, adolescents, and select young adults with serious illness and their families within the McGill University hospital network both in hospital and at home. The team also provides Perinatal Palliative Care consultations at the MUHC. Quebec’s first Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Pediatric Palliative Medicine subspecialty residency training program, accredited in 2023, will also be an integral part of the Division’s academic mission, with the first trainee to begin in 2025.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be an active physician member of the Division of Pediatric Palliative Medicine at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, MUHC, and will have clinical duties with PACT throughout the MCH.

The successful academic clinician candidate will be expected to divide their time as follows:

1) Clinical service (0.7- 0.9 FTE):

The focus of clinical work will be in Pediatric Palliative Medicine with additional opportunities in the Division of General Pediatrics or another division in the Department of Pediatrics, depending on training and expertise;

2) Education/Research/Other Academic (0.1- 0.3 FTE):

Participation in departmental and divisional academic activities such as research, teaching, quality improvement, and program development is required. Two priority areas include Perinatal Palliative Care and the Royal College-accredited Pediatric Palliative Medicine training program.

Research and other academic activities are encouraged and supported. The successful applicant will be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission. This includes scholarly activities in Pediatric Palliative Medicine, formal teaching to medical students, residents, and fellows, clinical supervision of learners, and involvement in academic and administrative committees. Participation in the Pediatric Palliative Medicine subspecialty training program is mandatory. Physicians in the Division of Pediatric Palliative Medicine are also expected to contribute to our interdisciplinary education mission, supporting the education and professional development of nurses and nurse practitioners.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

• Hold an MD degree (or equivalent) and must hold, or be eligible for, licensure in the Province of Quebec;
• Have completed postgraduate clinical training in Pediatrics;
• Have completed specialty training in Pediatric Palliative Medicine with certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent);
• Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
