Requirements
  • A current New Hampshire license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • National Board of Respiratory Care credentials are required.
  • Experience with the listed respiratory therapeutic modalities is required.
  • Ability to work in a team environment is required.
  • Ability to perform the physical and mental tasks associated with the position, including sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting or carrying up to 35 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally, is required.
Responsibilities
  • Draw and analyze arterial blood gases and perform patient assessments.
  • Implement Therapist Driven Protocols and follow the therapeutic goals outlined in them.
  • Manage continuous mechanical ventilation and perform critical-care ventilator procedures, including ventilator parameter changes, spontaneous breathing trials, cuff-pressure checks, and weaning assessments.
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, bronchial hygiene, chest physical therapy, oxygen administration, hyperinflation therapy, aerosol therapy, incentive spirometry, and pulmonary function screening studies.
  • Perform emergency procedures, including establishing airways and endotracheal intubation, and respond to Trauma Team, PCI Team, Code Blue, and Rapid Response Team activations.
  • Operate infant-mode and portable mechanical ventilators, including during transport of intubated patients.
  • Perform updraft nebulizer, metered-dose inhaler, intermittent positive-pressure breathing, and ultrasonic nebulizer therapies as ordered or revised under protocol.
  • Obtain blood gases, run and analyze blood-gas controls, monitor pulse oximetry, initiate overnight saturation studies, and generate required reports.
  • Document respiratory treatments, assessments, education, oxygen therapy, pulse-oximetry results, ventilator changes, and other patient-care activities in the electronic medical record and required paper forms.
  • Enter and update Therapist Driven Protocol orders in the electronic medical record.
  • Monitor patients for adverse reactions, document occurrences, and communicate concerns to physicians and managers.
  • Conduct oxygen rounds, check and change oxygen equipment, and adjust oxygen therapy based on patient monitoring and provider direction.
  • Provide patient and family education when appropriate.
  • Complete shift paperwork, including Cardex, treatment cards, extended therapy sheets, and special procedure forms.
  • Maintain equipment, turn around and stock supplies, and complete initial and annual equipment competencies and computer-based learning assignments.
  • When assigned charge duties, distribute and prioritize staff workload, address staffing gaps according to policy, clarify respiratory therapy orders, and communicate problems to the Respiratory and Pulmonary Services Manager.
  • Present one topic per year to the Respiratory Therapy staff when assigned charge duties.
  • Generate or offer ideas and concepts that promote individual and departmental growth.
