Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Supervise a work crew in the repair, maintenance and replacement of bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures and equipment operational standards.
  • Establish daily work goals, monitor performance, provide on-going coaching, and document and evaluate work accomplishments.
  • Perform a combination of skilled tasks to include carpentry, welding and concrete finishing. Remove and install structural components to erect, replace or demolish structures.
  • Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures. Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and clean up after accidents. Provide traffic control.
  • Apply appropriate in-stream and environmental protection measures during all structural maintenance and construction activities.
  • Perform a full range of bridge maintenance activities and tasks including equipment operation, preventive maintenance, and manual labor. Apply skill and specialized knowledge of equipment operation and bridge maintenance techniques, materials and specifications to perform tasks. Ensure safe and appropriate use and maintenance of equipment and tools.
  • Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction related work tasks.
  • Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Ensure workplace safety by identifying workplace hazards and making suggestions for improvement. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA/VOSHA, etc.) and train crew members on proper safety methods. Ensure equipment is used properly and safely. Oversee the maintenance of a clean, orderly and safe work environment.
  • Assist Bridge Superintendent in developing and planning work schedules to obtain needed tools, equipment, materials and other resources needed to achieve work objectives. Assign daily work tasks to crew and monitor work performed to ensure projects are completed safely, on time and within budget. Monitor, inspect and document contractor performance to ensure contract compliance. Serve as back-up for Superintendent and represent the work area in meetings. Perform supervisory duties during emergency operations.
  • Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives. Perform manual labor and other tasks as needed to assist the team in accomplishing construction, repair and maintenance of timber, steel and concrete bridge elements and other structures.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools. Transport personnel, equipment and materials to and from various work sites. Ensure all equipment is properly and safely maintained. Complete pre-trip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Perform technical and administrative duties to facilitate and support efficient operations. Investigate, review and respond to complaints and update AMS. Assist with review and determination of repair and maintenance needs. Complete daily work reports including time, materials, and equipment, work performed and other administrative reports and correspondence as needed.
  • Take proactive steps to ensure crew has the skills and abilities to meet business needs. Monitor crew performance to evaluate skill levels and identify opportunities for training and development. Conduct on-the-job training and recommend and coordinate additional training with superintendent. Provide on-going constructive feedback to crew members. Model proper methods, techniques, and safety practices for all aspects of the job at all times.
Desired Qualifications
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Construction, or related field desired.
  • Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications.
  • DEQ: Inspector for Erosion Sediment Control (ESC IN).
  • Experience in carpentry, concrete placement and finishing, and steel component fabrication. Experience leading, supervising and training.
  • Experience in inventory management.
  • Experience in the maintenance or construction of bridges and structures.
  • Experience leading, supervising and training others.
  • Experience supervising others and evaluating performance.
  • Flagger.
  • Valid Commercial Drivers license.
