Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in medical technology or a related field and four years of post-licensure experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • New York State licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist upon hire is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform bench work as needed.
  • Enforce environmental and safety procedures.
  • Oversee and set goals for training laboratory personnel on safety issues.
  • Oversee and maintain weekly stock inventory, including distillation of chemicals.
  • Ensure instrumentation, equipment, and supplies are in good working order.
  • Arrange for additional maintenance service as needed.
  • Ensure adequate staffing schedules for department-specific assignments to meet priority-processing demands and required turnaround times.
  • Assist in the development and evaluation of new policies and procedures.
  • Recommend modifications to policies and procedures as needed.
  • Implement and enforce laboratory policies, including standardized assay methods, schedules, safety standards, professional conduct, laboratory-result evaluation and reporting, preventive maintenance procedures and records, housekeeping, supply inventories, patient rights and well-being, and quality assurance.
  • Communicate problems to laboratory leadership.
  • Maintain quality control over the laboratory section, including proficiency testing.
  • Review laboratory data and results for general correctness and analytic reliability, and collaborate with the team to review final reports before release to physicians or inclusion in permanent medical records.
  • Maintain a variance log for laboratory staff.
  • Maintain training and competency protocols and participate in resident training.
  • Provide training to new staff members.
  • Maintain accountability for the professional conduct and technical performance of staff members in the designated laboratory section.
  • Participate in interviews and recruitment and recommend personnel actions, including promotions, disciplinary actions, and terminations, in consultation with the Human Resources Business Partner.
  • Assist leadership with performance evaluations, including tracking and maintaining competency files for staff members.
  • Provide daily counseling and feedback.
  • Participate in and coordinate others in special projects.
  • Work on annual operating and capital budgets as needed.
  • Respond to variance queries.
  • Participate in selecting and purchasing new equipment or software.
  • Oversee and assist with updating methodologies, evaluating instrumentation and software, and developing new assays.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
