Requirements

  • Has advanced knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and court decisions regarding employment-related matters needed to minimize exposure.
  • Has advanced knowledge of other areas in human resources for academic personnel and is capable of developing, interpreting, implementing, and administering organization-wide academic personnel policies and processes.
  • Demonstrates the advanced-level skills necessary to bargain and represent the university's interests effectively.
  • Demonstrated skills to provide guidance to managers and employees on complex and significant labor and employee relations issues.
  • Demonstrated skills and abilities in leading management in the areas of conflict and change management.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise excellent judgment in responding to employee and labor relations-related requests.
  • Understanding of the principles related to management, supervision, and leadership to provide expert-level advice and counsel.
  • Demonstrated success in administering performance management systems and mentoring managers on the process of evaluating performance.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of the principles of advocacy in order to represent the organization in complex and sensitive dispute forums.
  • Possesses specialized knowledge within the labor relations field.
  • Demonstrates the ability to lead and mentor other labor relations professionals and to handle extremely difficult or volatile situations and individuals effectively.
  • Written, verbal, and presentation skills for presenting and communicating complex information to managers at varying levels in the organization on employee relations issues.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience or training.
  • Juris Doctorate.
  • Minimum five years in the field of labor and employee relations with progressive responsibilities with a bachelor's degree; minimum three years in the field of labor and employee relations with progressive responsibilities with a master's degree or Juris Doctorate.
  • Legal right to work in the United States.
Responsibilities
  • Provide consultation and recommendations to academic leadership regarding strategic decision-making on performance management, compliance, conflict management, and grievance resolution for represented and non-represented academic appointees.
  • Analyze diverse and complex labor and employee relations matters and develop solutions that balance risk and business needs.
  • Lead employee and labor relations projects critical to the organization and work on systemwide projects and objectives.
  • Develop internal and external contacts and determine methods and procedures for new assignments.
  • Provide employee and labor relations support to managers and supervisors to resolve issues.
  • Facilitate meetings with union representatives, employees, and management to resolve problems.
  • Identify issues requiring corrective action and provide alternatives for resolution.
  • Assist with formal documentation of disciplinary actions up to and including dismissal, make referrals, and obtain required approvals.
  • Update stakeholders on employee and labor relations matters.
  • Ensure compliance with academic personnel policy and procedure, labor agreements, and employee and labor relations laws.
  • Work collaboratively with systemwide and campus stakeholder offices.
  • Review and respond to complex and sensitive complaints and information requests involving discrimination, harassment, retaliation, whistleblower matters, abusive conduct, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
  • Coordinate campus responses and address information requests from unions and outside legal counsel for litigation, grievance proceedings, or adjudication.
  • Present the University's position at grievance and arbitration hearings when requested.
  • Prepare written responses, analyses, and recommendations and write responses for University management.
  • Assist hearing officers or committees with the administrative and grievance review process.
  • Facilitate formal and informal dispute settlements and negotiate and finalize written settlement agreements in accordance with University policies and procedures.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and expert testimony at depositions, hearings, adjudication proceedings, grievance hearings, and litigation.
  • Select methods and techniques for obtaining solutions with minimal direction.
  • Prioritize work assignments, adapt to changing priorities, conduct complex analyses, and develop recommendations.
  • Serve in a lead capacity by providing guidance to other employee and labor relations professionals.
Desired Qualifications
  • Expert knowledge of systemwide, campus, or other postsecondary academic institution or medical center policies and procedures; expert knowledge of the functional area and understanding of how work impacts other areas in Academic Personnel and the system.
  • Master's degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field.
