Requirements
  • At least two years of experience performing manual or machine-assisted labor, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; and present information in one-on-one and small-group situations.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic with whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, and compute rate, ratio, and percent.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagrammed instructions and address problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • A valid Texas Motor Vehicle Operator's License is required.
  • A driving record that meets County and insurance-carrier standards is required for employees who drive on official business.
  • Ability to safely operate work equipment and follow safety standards.
  • Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work, understand and follow oral and some written instructions, and work cooperatively with employees, officials, and the general public.
  • Ability to supervise and motivate employees.
  • Ability to meet the stated physical demands, including frequent lifting or moving of up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting or moving of up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in outdoor weather conditions and near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
Responsibilities
  • Give daily work assignments to crewmembers.
  • Perform and supervise the movement of furniture and other county property.
  • Perform simple repairs and light maintenance on equipment and vehicles used in the work.
  • Load and unload materials and equipment, drive a truck, and haul materials to and from work sites.
  • Trim, edge, and weed county property; apply fertilizers and insecticides and water county grounds as needed.
  • Remain on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies as directed by the supervisor.
  • Directly supervise Maintenance Workers and assigned Community Service Workers in the Building Maintenance Department.
  • Train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; appraise performance; reward and discipline employees; address complaints; and resolve problems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
