Duke Energy cuts Eastern NC and Asheville rate increase from 15.1% to 9.3%

Duke Energy Progress has agreed to reduce its proposed rate increase for customers in eastern North Carolina and the Asheville area from 15.1% to 9.3% over two years. The average residential customer will pay an additional $9.62 per month starting January, plus $5.89 more beginning January 2028. The settlement also caps Duke's return on equity at 9.8%. This follows significant pushback from state leaders and customers after Duke Energy reported $5 billion in profits in 2025 and over $1 billion in net income last quarter. The North Carolina Utilities Commission will review the proposal starting 11 August, with a final decision expected this autumn. Duke Energy Carolinas previously lowered its rate increase to 9.5%. Both Duke utilities will merge into one by 1 January 2026.

Duke Energy falls 1.7% on $1.75B equity units offering

Duke Energy announced a $1.75 billion equity units offering, launching 35 million units priced at $50 each. The stock fell 1.7% in morning trading, opening at $123.50 and dropping to an intraday low of $122.78 from a previous close of $124.85. The company said proceeds will refinance debt and repay commercial paper. The offering forms part of a broader $10 billion equity issuance plan through 2030, which analysts have identified as an ongoing source of shareholder dilution. Recent sentiment has been pressured by Barclays and BMO Capital reducing price targets following Duke Energy's Q2 earnings. The utility sector has posted limited gains in 2026, with defensive stocks lagging amid risk-neutral market conditions ahead of upcoming inflation data releases.

Duke Energy Q2 profit beats forecasts at $1.43 per share, up 14% year-on-year

Duke Energy reported second-quarter 2026 earnings of $1.43 per share, beating analyst expectations of $1.32 and up 14% from $1.25 a year earlier. Revenue rose to $7.59 billion from $7.51 billion, narrowly missing forecasts of $7.61 billion. The company maintained its full-year guidance of $6.55 to $6.80 per share. Chief executive Harry Sideris highlighted strong operational performance and constructive regulatory outcomes. The Electric Utilities and Infrastructure segment generated adjusted income of $1.31 billion, compared with $1.19 billion in the prior year. Earnings growth was driven by infrastructure investment recovery, partially offset by higher depreciation and interest costs. Duke Energy serves 8.7 million electricity customers across six US states.

NextEra Energy proposes $67B all-stock merger with Dominion Energy to create world's largest regulated electric utility

NextEra Energy has proposed a $67 billion all-stock merger with Dominion Energy to create the world's largest regulated electric utility. The deal would combine Dominion's operations across Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina with NextEra's Florida footprint, serving over 10 million customers with 110 gigawatts of generation capacity and a $138 billion rate base. NextEra, currently the largest US electric utility and a leading wind and solar producer, reported a 31% net income margin for the quarter ended March 2026. The company's revenues have been volatile due to its renewable energy division, which is affected by spot price fluctuations and project timing. Meanwhile, Duke Energy recently sold its Tennessee Piedmont Natural Gas business to Spire and reported a 17% net income margin for the same quarter. The merger is expected to drive annualised adjusted EPS growth of at least 9% through 2032.

Duke Energy adds AI bill explainer to Carolinas app

Duke Energy has launched an AI-powered Bill Insights feature in its mobile app for customers in the Carolinas. The tool provides personalised, plain-language explanations of monthly energy bills, particularly focusing on higher summer usage. The utility company's shares are trading at $128.33, with a 9.3% return year-to-date. Duke Energy is introducing this digital feature as part of a broader move towards data-driven customer support in the utility sector. The AI tool aims to reduce call volumes and improve customer satisfaction whilst Duke Energy pursues substantial capital spending projects, including nuclear licence reviews and data centre developments. The feature provides clearer bill breakdowns that could help manage customer expectations during planned rate increases for infrastructure programmes.
