Medtronic faces $88M hernia mesh verdict as Health Canada approves cardiac ablation system

Medtronic faces contrasting developments after a federal jury ordered it to pay $88 million in compensatory damages over injuries linked to Covidien hernia mesh in August 2026. The verdict represents a record settlement in the ongoing litigation. Meanwhile, Medtronic Canada secured Health Canada approval for its Affera Integrated Mapping and Ablation System, designed to treat atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. The approval gives Medtronic a second pulsed field ablation platform alongside its existing PulseSelect system. The company's investment narrative projects $41.5 billion in revenue and $6.6 billion in earnings by 2029, requiring 4.5% annual revenue growth. Analysts estimate a fair value of $98.00, representing a 7% upside from current levels. However, cautious analysts forecast lower revenue of around $38.6 billion and earnings of approximately $6.2 billion by 2029, citing concerns over legal exposure and execution risks.

Medtronic wins Health Canada approval for Affera heart rhythm system

Medtronic has received Health Canada approval for its Affera Integrated Mapping System and Sphere-9 Catheter to treat atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. The licence permits commercial use of Medtronic's combined pulse field and radiofrequency ablation technologies across Canada. The Affera system offers physicians an all-in-one mapping and ablation platform designed to support procedural efficiency and patient care. The approval represents a milestone for Medtronic's Cardiac Ablation Solutions division in the global atrial fibrillation treatment market. Medtronic, a US-based medical equipment company with a market capitalisation of approximately $115.9 billion, develops and sells device-based therapies to healthcare systems and clinicians globally. The approval extends Medtronic's cardiac ablation offerings from Europe and the US into Canada, where it will compete with Abbott and Boston Scientific.

Medtronic executive Shields appointed CEO at Versa Vascular.

Medtronic executive Shields appointed CEO at Versa Vascular. 13th August 2026 Versa Vascular, developer of a novel transcatheter tricuspid valve repair system - AdapTR - has announced changes to its senior management team and the completion of new investment to support clinical study of its device. The company announced that Bill Shields, a former vice president and general manager of Medtronic's Transcatheter Mitral and Tricuspid Therapies division joins as CEO, replacing the retiring David Hovda, who will remain as an advisor to the company. According to Versa, Shields spent 15 years with Medtronic, where he spent seven years leading product development and multiple clinical studies. Previously, he led upstream and downstream marketing for the company's transcatheter valve programs over eight years, including multiple successful product launches. The company also announced a US$15 million expansion to its series C financing, bringing the total committed capital for the round to US$42 million, supporting completion of the ongoing first-in-human clinical study of the AdapTR device outside of the USA, a US early feasibility study of the technology, and further product development and optimisation. "I am thrilled to join Versa Vascular at a time when we are seeing positive results clinically, close to expanding our clinical work to the USA, and receiving continued investor confidence," said Shields. "I have seen and launched a number of innovative transcatheter devices in my career, and the AdapTR technology shows similar promise to create a superior therapy for patients. I want to thank David Hovda and the team for their commitment to product development and refinement that has led to a truly novel solution that is showing it can have a positive impact on patients' lives." "We strongly believe in Versa's vision to improve the lives of patients with tricuspid disease, and we are proud to continue supporting the company as it executes on its clinical milestones," said Brian R Smith, founder and managing director of S3 Ventures. "We also enthusiastically welcome Bill Shields to the Versa team," said Louis A Cannon, founder of BioStar Capital. "Bill's deep structural heart expertise, experience developing new transcatheter therapies, scaling up operations, and strong industry connections align closely with BioStar's mission to improve patients' lives."

UBS upgrades Medtronic to Buy as cardiac segment drives 78% revenue growth

UBS upgraded Medtronic to Buy from Neutral, citing an ongoing turnaround at the medical technology company. The upgrade follows Medtronic's strongest annual revenue growth in a decade, with Q4 revenue reaching $9.8 billion, up 6.6% organically, and full-year revenue hitting $36.4 billion, up 5.8% organically. The company's cardiac segment showed particularly strong growth, with Cardiac Ablation Solutions revenue rising 78% globally. New product launches, including Symplicity Spyral for hypertension, which is now annualising at $100 million, are gaining traction. However, analysts caution that several more quarters of consistent execution are needed before the turnaround can be considered complete, given management's multi-year efforts to accelerate growth.

Medtronic and Intuitive Surgical lag market amid sector weakness

Medtronic and Intuitive Surgical, two medical device leaders, have underperformed this year due to sector weakness and company-specific challenges. However, both show potential for recovery. Medtronic's fourth-quarter revenue rose 9.9% to $9.8 billion, though adjusted earnings per share fell 4.3% to $1.55 due to higher costs, including tariffs. The company posted its highest annual revenue growth in a decade, driven partly by its Pulse Field Ablation franchise. Medtronic recently received FDA clearance for its Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system for urologic procedures, positioning it to compete in the underpenetrated robotic surgery market. The company plans to spin off its lower-margin diabetes care division, which should improve margins. With a 3.4% forward dividend yield and 49 consecutive years of payout increases, Medtronic appeals to income-focused investors.
