Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in machine learning, cybersecurity, statistics, or a related discipline plus three years of experience, or a Master of Science degree in the same fields plus one year of experience.
  • A deep interest in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity, along with intellectual curiosity and a desire to make an impact beyond the organization.
  • Practical experience applying cybersecurity knowledge to vulnerability research, analysis, disclosure, or mitigation.
  • Familiarity with implementing and applying artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to solve practical problems.
  • Familiarity with common artificial intelligence and machine learning software packages and tools, including NumPy, PyTorch, TensorFlow, and the Adversarial Robustness Toolbox.
  • Knowledge of or familiarity with reverse engineering tools such as NSA Ghidra and IDA Pro.
  • Experience with Python, C, C++, or low-level programming.
  • Experience developing frameworks, methodologies, or assessments to evaluate the effectiveness and robustness of technologies.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, particularly for technical communications with non-experts.
  • Ability to travel to various locations supporting the SEI mission, including sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings, approximately 5% of the time.
  • Ability to undergo a background check and obtain and maintain a Department of War security clearance.
Responsibilities
  • Develop state-of-the-art approaches for analyzing the robustness of artificial intelligence systems.
  • Apply these approaches to understand vulnerabilities in artificial intelligence systems and how attackers adapt their tradecraft to exploit those vulnerabilities.
  • Reverse engineer malicious code in support of high-impact customers.
  • Design and develop new analysis methods and tools.
  • Identify and address emerging and complex threats to artificial intelligence systems.
  • Participate effectively in the broader security community.
  • Study and influence the artificial intelligence security and vulnerability disclosure ecosystems.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of tools, techniques, and processes developed by industry and the artificial intelligence security research community.
  • Uncover and shape fundamental assumptions underlying current best practices in artificial intelligence security.
  • Develop threat models, tools, and data sets to characterize threats to and vulnerabilities in artificial intelligence systems, and publish the results.
  • Use research results to aid in testing, evaluating, and transitioning technologies developed by government-funded research programs.
  • Identify opportunities to apply artificial intelligence to improve existing cybersecurity research.
  • Co-author research proposals, execute studies, and present findings and recommendations to Department of War sponsors, government and industry decision-makers, and academic conferences.
