Amentum is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Environmental Specialist to join our Environmental Safety and Occupational Health (ESOH) team in Springfield, VA. This position is focused primarily on environmental compliance and management, with a preference for candidates possessing some industrial hygiene experience. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in ensuring environmental health and safety standards are met within our operations at a government facility.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Environmental Management and Compliance:
- Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of environmental programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Conduct and participate in regular inspections, audits, and assessments to identify and mitigate environmental risks stormwater, CAA/ODS, refrigeration management, above ground storage tanks,
- Support the management and oversight of stormwater management practices to reduce pollution and ensure compliance with Virginia Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (VPDES) requirements.
- Monitor air emissions, ensuring compliance with the Clean Air Act and other relevant standards.
- Maintain various site permits and programs to include stormwater, waste water, air, waste, etc.
2. Waste Management:
- Support universal and hazardous waste management activities, including tracking, storage, and disposal,
in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Prepare and maintain accurate hazardous waste documentation and reports.
3. Environmental Monitoring:
- Assist in conducting environmental sampling, testing, and monitoring of air, water, and soil to ensure adherence to environmental standards.
- Analyze data and prepare reports to communicate findings and recommendations.
4. Sustainability Initiatives:
- Contribute to the development and implementation of sustainability programs aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of operations.
- Participate in initiatives for energy conservation, waste reduction, and pollution prevention.
5. Site Clean-Up and Remediation:
- Assist in planning and overseeing environmental clean-up activities related to contamination or hazardous materials.
- Keep detailed records of site assessments and remediation activities.
6. Construction Project Oversight:
- Collaborate with construction teams to ensure that project activities comply with environmental regulations and best practices.
- Review construction plans to identify potential environmental impacts and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Assist with the preparation of Environmental Assessments and impact statements or categorical exception documents in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
- Assist with the development and review of environmental related documents for construction projects to include dig permit requests, chemical use requests. safety data sheet reviews, air emissions calculations/record of non-applicability documents. May include other documents related to stormwater, wetlands, air emissions, and other environmental programs, as needed.
7. Training and Education:
- Support the development and delivery of training programs for staff related to environmental health and safety policies and procedures.
- Promote awareness and understanding of best practices in environmental management across the organization.
8. Collaboration with EHS Team:
- Work as part of the safety team to promote a culture of health and safety within the organization.
- Participate in safety trainings and meetings and contribute to a culture of safety within the organization.
9. Reporting and Documentation:
- Prepare and maintain regulatory reports and documentation necessary for government compliance.
- Assist in the preparation of environmental reports and submittals required by regulatory agencies for various environmental programs (water, air, etc.)
10. Other Duties:
- Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by management to support the EHS team and project goals.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Policy, Sustainability, Environmental, Health, and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
- Experience in hazardous waste management, stormwater management, or air emissions preferred but not mandatory.
- Familiarity with industrial hygiene practices is a plus.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of working effectively in a team environment.
- Active security clearance or ability to obtain security clearance required (TS/SCI – with CI Poly).
