Requirements
  • Ability to pass a test demonstrating basic understanding of AC/DC theory, Ohm’s law, single-phase and three-phase systems, watts, vars, volt-amperes, phase angles, power factor, power-system parameters, computers, and associated software.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and electronic schematics and functional diagrams.
  • Ability to use multimeters, relay test instruments, oscilloscopes, and digital analyzers.
  • Basic knowledge of computers and associated software.
  • Ability to pass the applicable EEI Technician test or company-selected Technician Test, as applicable.
  • Ability to obtain Switching and Tagging Certification within 180 days.
  • Successful completion of the Assistant SPAC training program or equivalent, where applicable.
  • For the Assistant System and Control Technician level, a minimum two-year degree or equivalent two-year diploma or certificate program from a vocational school or community college in Electronics, Electrical Technology, or a similar electrical field; alternatively, an honorable military discharge with electronics or related experience, or journeyman electrician status in the Substation Construction and Substation Maintenance seniority group.
  • For the System and Control Technician level, a minimum two-year degree or equivalent two-year diploma or certificate program in Electronics, Electrical Technology, or a similar electrical field; alternatively, an honorable military discharge with electronics or related experience, or journeyman relay technician classification at Duke Energy or another utility.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 75 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools and controls.
  • Ability to sit for two to three hours, move frequently, climb or use authorized equipment to reach heights, bend, stoop, squat, and work in enclosed or tight spaces.
  • Ability to work all hours as needed, including nights, weekends, holidays, and all weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel and stay overnight at various locations and respond to periodic power-system emergency call-outs.
  • Ability to work lawfully in the United States without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future.
Responsibilities
  • Calibrate, install, maintain, and repair protective relays and associated equipment for safe and reliable electric-grid operation.
  • Maintain, install, repair, and troubleshoot complex control systems, microprocessor and electromechanical protective relay systems, substation and electric-utility protection systems, and station automation and supervisory control and data acquisition systems.
  • Read and properly interpret substation drawings, including single-line drawings, alternating-current and direct-current schematics, panel-wiring diagrams, and panel-layout drawings.
  • Perform switching and tagging to obtain proper equipment clearance for repair, maintenance, or construction work according to procedure.
  • Work in generation plants, transmission switchyards and control houses, and distribution substations.
  • Respond to power-system emergencies through periodic call-outs.

Duke Energy cuts Eastern NC and Asheville rate increase from 15.1% to 9.3%

Duke Energy Progress has agreed to reduce its proposed rate increase for customers in eastern North Carolina and the Asheville area from 15.1% to 9.3% over two years. The average residential customer will pay an additional $9.62 per month starting January, plus $5.89 more beginning January 2028. The settlement also caps Duke's return on equity at 9.8%. This follows significant pushback from state leaders and customers after Duke Energy reported $5 billion in profits in 2025 and over $1 billion in net income last quarter. The North Carolina Utilities Commission will review the proposal starting 11 August, with a final decision expected this autumn. Duke Energy Carolinas previously lowered its rate increase to 9.5%. Both Duke utilities will merge into one by 1 January 2026.
