The Economy, Summer Plans, And The Polls

Around Memorial Day, pollsters often ask Americans about their summer vacation plans. Responses are a rough barometer of feelings about the economy’s health and our own prospects. What have we learned from recent polls? Will most Americans take a summer vacation?Last week the University of Michigan released its latest Consumer Sentiment Index, reporting that sentiment was “unchanged” from April, ending four consecutive months of “plunging declines.” Michigan attributed the change to the pause at the time of the survey in Donald Trump’s on-again, off-again tariff pronouncements. Gallup reported that overall assessments of the economy were “unchanged” from early 2025 readings. In the May Harvard Center for American Political Studies/Harris poll, 51% of registered voters described the economy as strong for the first time since July 2021, while almost as many, 49%, described it as weak. Most people in another question said their personal financial situation was weak (39%), but that represented an improvement from Harvard/Harris polls during the winter

Why California Drivers Could Soon Pay $8 A Gallon For Gas

(Photo by Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images) Gado via Getty ImagesOn the heels of my recent article outlining how California’s unique fuel regulations — not corporate price gouging — are driving up gasoline prices in the state, new developments have added urgency to that conversation. On May 6, California Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones (R-San Diego) sent a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom sounding the alarm over what could become an energy and economic crisis in the state. Citing an analysis by University of Southern California professor Michael Mische, the letter warns that gas prices could spike 75% by 2026 — reaching as high as $8.43 per gallon — if two major refineries are allowed to shut down as planned. This follows Professor Mische’s earlier study, which I referenced in my prior article. His research identified structural factors and policy-driven costs as the primary reasons California gasoline prices are consistently the highest in the nation — not oil company profiteering

Microsoft President: Business Leaders ‘Remarkably United’ In Opposition To State Tax Proposals

“It’s going to be a lot easier to help grow the state’s economy if we have a sensible approach to taxation,” says Microsoft President Brad Smith. (GeekWire File Photo / Kevin Lisota)A coalition of Washington state business leaders released a letter Wednesday urging state lawmakers to reconsider recently proposed tax and budget measures, echoing concerns raised by Gov. Bob Ferguson this week. The proposals, if approved, “would result in the largest tax increases in state history, perpetuating a dangerous trend of unsustainable spending growth,” reads the letter to state House and Senate leaders, signed by the executives of four major business organizations and 65 other business leaders from across the state.“I actually think it’s an almost unprecedented outpouring of support from across the business community,” said Microsoft President Brad Smith in an interview. “From the border of Idaho to the Pacific Ocean and from Canada to Oregon, the business community in the state is remarkably united on this.”Two weeks ago, Senate Democratic budget leaders unveiled their revenue proposal for the 2025–27 budget. The plan includes a new 5% payroll tax on large employers, along with a “financial intangibles” tax targeting high-net-worth individuals. The proposal comes amid a projected state budget shortfall of up to $16 billion. Additional measures under consideration include lifting limits on property tax increases and reducing the statewide sales tax rate.At a news conference Tuesday, Ferguson said he would not sign the current 2025-27 state budget proposals from either the House or the Senate
