Requirements
  • A doctoral degree in composition is required; ABD candidates may be considered if the degree is completed by the end of 2026.
  • Equivalent international professional experience may be considered.
  • A strong record of compositions and performances commensurate with the candidate’s career stage is required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in notated composition within Western art or concert music traditions, including strong compositional craft and knowledge of relevant techniques, idioms, and forms, is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the aesthetics, historical trends, and repertoire relevant to contemporary composition in the 21st century is required.
  • A composition portfolio demonstrating a strong musical personality is required.
  • Evidence of significant creative activity and an international profile appropriate to career stage is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing in scholarly, artistic, and pedagogical contexts is required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, advising, and mentoring diverse student cohorts is required.
  • Candidates must be committed to creating an inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment for students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and artistic perspectives.

  • English communication is required verbally and in writing for teaching and research activities.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain a high level of professional creative activity.
  • Teach and supervise students across undergraduate and graduate programs, including at the doctoral level.
  • Teach composition tutorials, undergraduate courses, and graduate seminars.
  • Contribute substantially to the development of students, curricula, and artistic initiatives within the Composition Area and the Schulich School of Music.
  • Contribute to the development of Montréal’s broader contemporary music community.
  • Contribute to service activities within the Composition Area, the Schulich School of Music, and McGill University more broadly.
  • Contribute to curricular innovation and shape the future of composition, research-creation, and contemporary music study at McGill.
  • Support the development of the local and national contemporary creative community.

The McGill Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship helps people at McGill turn ideas into startups by providing education, mentorship, and practical startup frameworks. Club M&A and McGill's Dobson Centre launch acquisition programme as $218B in Canadian businesses set for ownership transition

Club M&A Canada and McGill's Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship have opened registration for their first Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition programme. The intensive four-day course, running 27–30 October in Montreal, targets professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs interested in acquiring existing small or medium-sized businesses. The programme addresses a significant succession challenge in Canada. According to the Business Development Bank of Canada, nearly one in five Canadian businesses will undergo ownership transition within five years, representing over $300 billion in business revenue. Marc Deegan, founder of R33 Ventures, will serve as programme director. The curriculum covers developing investment theses, target evaluation, financial and legal considerations, acquisition financing, and post-acquisition transition. Instructors include transaction professionals, lawyers, tax specialists, investors, and entrepreneurs with acquisition experience. Admission is by application, with no prior M&A experience required.
