Requirements
  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or 10 years of work experience.
  • Applicants must reside in Wisconsin within a geographic area served by the Workforce Development Board of South-Central Wisconsin (Greater Madison area).
  • Applicants must have reliable transportation to SSM Health clinic locations and the Madison College campus.
  • Applicants must be willing to sign and agree to the terms of the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Apprenticeship Program.
  • Applicants must complete the Madison College registration process and placement test to determine final eligibility and selection.
  • Applicants must complete three semesters of the Madison College Medical Assistant curriculum.
  • Applicants must complete all coursework and clinical rotations within an 18-month period.
  • Applicants must maintain a performance rating of “meets expectations” or higher.
  • Applicants must maintain a grade of “C” or better in all coursework.
  • Applicants must meet all on-the-job-learning competencies.
  • Upon completion, apprentices are expected to register for and pass the Certified Medical Assistant exam.
  • Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification is required within 90 days of employment; other resuscitation certifications may be required depending on the department.
  • Applicants must be able to perform the stated physical requirements, including standing, walking, lifting, reaching, keyboard use, and occasional patient movement.
Responsibilities
  • Assist providers with patient examinations, prepare examination rooms for specific procedures, and assist with specific procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate logbooks and monitor pharmaceutical sample cabinets for expired products when applicable.
  • Verify patient information at each visit, file and scan documents into the correct medical record, and provide new patients with required registration forms.
  • Notify patients of normal test results, process laboratory orders, return patient phone calls, and schedule testing, procedures, prescription refills, and referral appointments.
  • Administer medications safely and accurately under supervision.
  • Interview patients, record clinical information in medical records, prepare reports for provider review, collect information from agencies and referring providers, and document it appropriately.
  • Provide correct information to insurance companies, maintain patient confidentiality, and release patient information only with appropriate consent.
  • Obtain and document vital signs, collect and process specimens, and perform phlebotomy when training and competency requirements are met.
  • Clean and stock examination rooms, order supplies, and prepare nondisposable instruments for sterilization.
  • Schedule, reschedule, and cancel patient appointments as necessary.
  • Answer incoming phone calls promptly, direct calls to the appropriate person, take accurate messages, and deliver messages or tasks.
  • Assist with billing processes when applicable, including collecting and posting payments, balancing the cash drawer, preparing superbills, and updating financial and personal information.
  • File and scan documents into the correct patient medical record according to office guidelines.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
