Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED plus eight years of experience, including three years in a supervisory capacity in heating and air conditioning, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • A Universal Refrigeration Certificate and Master’s HVAC License may be required depending on the position; alternatively, a Master Electrician’s license is required.
  • A current and valid driver’s license is required.
  • Knowledge of electrical, fire alarm, fire protection sprinkler, special hazard fire protection, elevator, escalator, generator, uninterruptible power supply, surge protection, lightning protection, audio/visual, and master clock systems.
  • Knowledge of national, state, and local electrical, fire protection, and life safety system codes.
  • Ability to administer, enforce, and comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules and regulations, including daily use of personal protective equipment and arc-flash-rated uniforms and suits.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical.
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and hours beyond the normal schedule when required for department needs or emergencies.
  • Ability to work during inclement weather as an Alpha I safety-sensitive position.
  • Ability to comply with mandatory drug testing requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise maintenance engineers and electricians providing electrical maintenance and repair services throughout the City of Virginia Beach.
  • Schedule and prioritize work assignments.
  • Review mechanical plans and specifications for new installations and renovations to ensure work is complete and conforms to applicable electrical codes.
  • Perform work on complex components of electrical systems.
  • Conduct performance appraisals, grant leave, take disciplinary action, and make promotion recommendations.
  • Monitor orders for supplies, materials, and repair parts to ensure availability and reduce production delays.
