Merck has shifted its focus from the struggling GARDASIL vaccine to new medicines. On its August 4, 2026 earnings call, executives highlighted the FDA approval of LIPFENDRA, the first oral PCSK9 inhibitor, and positive Phase III results for sac-TMT. GARDASIL still brought in $1.2 billion in the second quarter of fiscal 2026, about 7% of Merck's $16.6 billion revenue. A year earlier, its sales had fallen 55% to $1.1 billion. Total revenue rose 5.1%. WINREVAIR sales reached $525 million, and CAPVAXIVE sold $142 million. Profit is the concern. Operating margin for the twelve months to June 2026 was 10.5%, against 31.2% a year earlier. Merck raised its revenue outlook but cut profit guidance because of a charge tied to buying Terns Pharmaceuticals.
Merck chief executive officer Rob Davis expects the company's personalised cancer vaccine with Moderna to become faster to make over time. He told CNBC the current timeline is six weeks, from sequencing a patient's tumour to delivering the shot to the hospital. "I do think over time you're going to see that timeline shortened," Davis said. For now, the focus is on readying supply and the market. The vaccine targets the mutations in each patient's tumour and is paired with Merck's immunotherapy Keytruda. In August, the companies released positive initial late-stage data in melanoma patients. Trials are also under way in lung, bladder, and kidney cancers. Davis spoke as Merck opened its 120,000-square-foot research facility, Advance, in West Point, Pennsylvania.
Merck to invest $2.9 billion in Montgomery County manufacturing expansion. By M. A. Tomlin October 14, 2026 Governor Josh Shapiro and Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Rick Siger announced on Oct. 14 that the Commonwealth has secured a $2.9 billion investment from Merck to expand its operations in Montgomery County by the end of 2030. The state is investing $5 million in the company's expansion, which will support manufacturing of lifesaving products and medicine discovery. As part of this commitment, Merck will invest $550 million in ADVANCE, a robotics and AI-enabled drug research and development facility at its West Point Campus, as well as the nearby Springhouse Innovation Park research and development facility. These investments are intended to help the company produce lifesaving medicines. "My Administration has made life sciences a key part of our economic development strategy here in Pennsylvania - and Merck's major investment in Montgomery County is another major win for the Commonwealth," said Governor Josh Shapiro. "We are proud to partner with Merck as they expand their operations in Montgomery County, advance cutting-edge research and manufacturing, and create new opportunities for thousands of Pennsylvanians. The life sciences industry is booming in Pennsylvania and I am committed to winning more investments like this and making sure our Commonwealth remains a national leader in innovation, medicine, and manufacturing." No additional background information was provided about previous investments or specific job creation figures related to this announcement.
Merck will report third-quarter 2026 results on October 29, and investors are watching sales of its cancer drug Keytruda, which makes up more than 55% of the company's pharmaceutical sales. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Keytruda's third-quarter sales is $7.45 billion. Keytruda sold $16.40 billion in the first half of 2026, up 4.2% year over year. Its subcutaneous version, Keytruda Qlex, added $590 million. Merck expects strong growth until Keytruda loses patent exclusivity in 2028, with peak sales of $35 billion. Biosimilar competition around 2028-2029 is likely to cut sales sharply. Rivals are growing unevenly. AstraZeneca's Imfinzi rose 29% to $3.55 billion, while Bristol Myers' Opdivo fell 3.9% to $4.63 billion. Merck shares are up 37.7% this year.
