GirlCode Hackathon kicks off in SA and Botswana.

GirlCode Hackathon kicks off in SA and Botswana. Aug 20, 2026 GirlCode, in partnership with Absa Group, Truecaller, MTN, SAP Fioneer, RS South Africa and other ecosystem partners, successfully hosted the first leg of the 2026 GirlCode Hackathon across Johannesburg, Cape Town and Botswana on 15 and 16 August 2026. Across the three locations, the hackathon brought together 177 participants, supported by more than 25 mentors and 25 volunteers who provided technical guidance, industry insights and on-the-ground support throughout the weekend. Now in its 12th year, the GirlCode Hackathon continues to grow from a South African coding competition into a pan-African platform designed to identify, develop and support the next generation of women building technology solutions for Africa. The Johannesburg, Cape Town and Gaborone hackathons mark the beginning of this year's continental programme, with further hackathons scheduled to take place across East and West Africa between September and October 2026. Winning teams from each participating country will progress to the Pan-African Finals, where Africa's top teams will compete for a Grand Cash Prize of R100 000 and an opportunity to take their ideas beyond the hackathon stage. GirlCode founder and CEO Zandile Mkwanazi says the organisation's ambition is for the hackathon to become more than an annual technology competition. "When we started the GirlCode Hackathon 12 years ago, our goal was to create a space where women could come together, code, learn and prove that they belonged in technology. What we are building today is much bigger than a competition. "We want to identify women with strong ideas, technical ability and the ambition to solve Africa's problems, and then give them a pathway to continue building beyond the weekend. The next phase of the GirlCode Hackathon is about helping winning teams turn promising solutions into technology startups that have the potential to create jobs, attract investment and scale across the continent." This evolution represents a deliberate shift in the GirlCode Hackathon model. While participants are still required to develop and present working technology solutions within an intensive hackathon environment, GirlCode is increasingly focused on what happens after the winners are announced. In Johannesburg, the winning team developed a knowledge-sharing platform designed to preserve local and cultural knowledge, demonstrating how technology and AI can be used not only to address commercial challenges, but also to protect and make Africa's knowledge more accessible for future generations. The aim is to create a stronger pipeline of female technologists, innovators and founders who are not only participating in Africa's digital economy, but actively building the products and companies that will shape it. "The success of the first leg of this year's hackathon highlights both the incredible talent of young women across Africa and the growing demand for platforms that help unlock that potential," says Tamu Dutuma, head of strategy and transformation, technology: Africa regions at Absa. "The GirlCode Hackathon brings together technology, innovation and purpose, challenging participants to build solutions with real social and economic impact. We want to see more women participating and leveraging technology to solve real problems that will drive prosperity and growth across the continent." or Mkwanazi, the continued continental expansion of the programme demonstrates both the appetite and the opportunity that exists among young African women. "The talent is here. The ideas are here. What is often missing is access - access to opportunities, networks, capital, technology and people who believe in those ideas early enough. "Our role through GirlCode is to help close that gap. We want a young woman who enters a GirlCode Hackathon with an idea to be able to imagine herself leaving not only as a winner, but potentially as the founder of Africa's next great technology company." Plans are currently afoot for East and West Africa Hackathons in partnership with Absa...

Only one of 40 summer ads cleared ASCI scrutiny without modifications. Truecaller launches Pulse to bring first-party and zero-party intent signals to advertisers. August 6, 2026 Truecaller, the caller identification and communication platform, has announced the launch of Truecaller Pulse, a new first-party and zero-party intent solution integrated into the Truecaller Ads ecosystem. Designed to help brands access consumer intent signals in a privacy-conscious environment, the offering aims to provide advertisers with deeper audience intelligence based on direct user interactions and declared preferences. The big idea: consumer choice is the most valuable signal in modern advertising. For over a decade, digital advertising has been built on inferred signals: clicks, browsing history, purchase proxies, and probabilistic modeling. Marketers have spent billions trying to reverse-engineer intent from behavior. Truecaller Pulse flips that model on its head: instead of guessing what consumers want, it allows you to ask them and lets their declared choice power the campaign. This is the belief driving Truecaller Pulse: when consumers tell you what they want, every part of your campaign, be it planning, targeting, messaging or media spend, gets smarter. How it works: Declare. Analyse. Activate. Embedded within Truecaller's high-attention, privacy-safe environments and reaching over 500 million active users, Truecaller Pulse runs on a simple, closed-loop framework: * Declare: Brands deploy interactive ad experiences that ask consumers direct questions - "Which smartphone are you planning to buy next?", "Are you considering switching banks?", "Which beverage brand do you prefer?" * Analyse: The Truecaller Pulse Engine instantly converts responses into structured signals across three dimensions - Preferences (what consumers want), Discovery (emerging category signals), and Purchase Intent (consumers ready to convert). * Activate: Declared responses become high-value, activation-ready audience segments in near real-time, enabling brands to retarget with tailored offers, creative, and recommendations while intent is still fresh. The result is an always-on Continuous Consumer Intelligence Loop with research, audience-building, and media activation unified into a single, self-reinforcing workflow. Built for the full range of a marketer's strategic needs. * Product Launches - Capture early consumer reactions and validate demand before scaling spend. * Category Discovery - Surface emerging preferences and whitespace opportunities across segments. * Competitive Switching - Identify consumers actively in-market for alternatives and win them with precision conquesting. Beyond activation, Truecaller Pulse delivers a layered intelligence stack: Pulse Signals for real-time declared responses, Pulse Insights for aggregated regional and category intelligence, and Pulse Trends for early signals of shifting consumer sentiment, often before it ever shows up in sales data. What this means for the industry. "Truecaller Pulse gives marketers something extremely valuable: direct consumer answers at unprecedented scale. When consumers tell you what they want, media becomes more precise, campaigns become more efficient, and every marketing decision becomes better informed," said, Hemant Arora, VP & Global Head, Truecaller Ads. "The intelligence outputs from Truecaller Pulse extend well beyond campaign activation. Pulse Signals deliver real-time declared responses. Pulse Insights surface aggregated intelligence, regional preferences, emerging product trends, category shifts. Pulse Trends reveal what's changing in consumer sentiment before it shows up in sales data. All of this feeds back into smarter future campaigns," added, Athul Prabhu, Product Director, Truecaller Ads. With Truecaller Pulse, Truecaller Ads is expanding its offering with a solution designed to help advertisers access and act on consumer intent signals more directly.

Better than expected for pressured Truecaller.

Better than expected for pressured Truecaller. Truecaller is still licking its wounds after changes at a large advertising partner shook the business. During the second quarter, both revenue and profit fell sharply compared to last year - but the decline was not as bad as analysts had feared. At the end of 2025, the communications company Truecaller issued a profit warning, which sent the stock down sharply, after a large ad network that Truecaller works with changed its algorithms. This caused the number of views and revenue to drop significantly. Since then, the company has tried to recover. During the second quarter, revenue amounted to 393 million kronor, a sharp decrease of 21 percent from 496 million kronor last year. Despite that, sales were higher than analysts' expectations, according to Modular Finance's estimates, which were at 377 million kronor. Adjusted ebitda, excluding costs for incentive programs, was 105.8 million kronor - a decrease of 50 percent compared to the same quarter last year. Here too, however, it beat market expectations, as estimates were at 91.2 million kronor. "The second quarter of the year marked an important step forward for Truecaller. Although comparisons with the previous year still reflect the challenges we have managed over the past quarters, we saw sequential improvements in all of our revenue streams, supported by the strategic initiatives implemented over the past quarters," comments CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala. Borrows and buys companies. Alongside the report, Truecaller announces that it has secured a loan of 850 million kronor from SEB. The background is that the company wants to "maintain a strong cash position" while it is being reviewed for possible errors in its transfer pricing in India, a review that could result in additional tax. A decision is expected during the first half of 2027. As part of the same loan agreement, Truecaller has extended its existing credit line with SEB of 500 million kronor to 2028, with the possibility of an additional two-year extension. At the same time, Truecaller has made an acquisition of Textplus, an American company also active in communication software with around 1.5 million active users, for the equivalent of 145 million kronor. The purchase is financed with its own funds.
