About The Role
We are looking for a Leader that is excited to drive the scaling of life-saving operations in the field in addition to executing clean sheet innovative designs for the next generation of autonomous drones.
As the Head of Guidance, Navigation, and Controls (GNC), you will be responsible for leading a team to deliver analyses and algorithms for improved operations for our existing platform and blank-slate GNC designs for new unmanned aerial systems across the entire globe. This work will enable Zipline’s impact to expand from 100 thousand deliveries/year to 100 million in a wide variety of environmental conditions around the world. As the Team Lead, you report to the Head of Engineering.

The ideal candidate will have an outstanding technical background and enjoys leading, growing, and inspiring Engineers as they continue to revolutionize the supply chain and logistic industry.
What You’ll Do
- Oversee and guide the GNC work being done on our operational platform, with the goal of increasing reliability, enabling growth, creating a better delivery experience for our customers, and reducing cost
- Lead the development of clean sheet vehicle designs from the early prototype stage through operations, including setting requirements, characterizing hardware, developing flight algorithms, developing simulations, overseeing flight tests, and integrating with other groups’ needs
- Develop and communicate the vision for the GNC strategy on existing and new platforms
- Review flight results, sim results, algorithms, and code in detail; proactively flagging and mitigate technical issues
- Understanding the appropriate risks to take in the development process

- Leverage your technical leadership experience to foster a team culture that biases towards action and tests ideas to achieve radically simple designs
- Motivate your team with a clear vision and create ambitious plans for your team’s work while holding a high bar for technical quality
- Build your team by hiring world-class engineers and engineering leaders
What You’ll Bring
- Past success leading engineering teams to deliver autonomous flight systems and support them through their operational life, with the level of rigor that a high volume or safety-critical application requires
- Deep technical depth in spacecraft or aircraft flight controls, inertial navigation systems, and simulation methods
