Wall Street's biggest banks pour billions into AI with mixed results on returns

Wall Street's largest banks are investing billions in AI, though questions persist about returns on these massive expenditures. JPMorgan leads with a nearly $20 billion annual technology budget, claiming its $2 billion AI investment has already matched costs in savings. The bank tracks how its engineers use AI tools and has deployed its proprietary platform to over 200,000 employees. Goldman Sachs spent $6 billion on technology this year, whilst announcing AI-driven efficiency measures that will slow hiring and reduce some roles. Citigroup takes a bottom-up approach with 4,000 employees trained as AI stewards, reporting nearly 90% staff usage of AI tools. Wells Fargo and Bank of America are also deploying AI across operations, from wealth advisory to code development. Morgan Stanley's partnership with OpenAI saved developers over 280,000 hours in the first half of last year. Despite widespread adoption, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon noted banks don't "uniquely benefit from AI" since everyone now uses it.

Wells Fargo sets $700 Microsoft price target as Azure tops $100B revenue

Wells Fargo analyst Michael Turrin has set the highest Microsoft price target on Wall Street at $700, up from $650. The firm had previously cut its target to $625 in July amid concerns over AI infrastructure spending. The reversal came after Microsoft's 29 July earnings report showed Azure crossing $100 billion in annualised revenue, growing 43% in constant currency. Microsoft reported adjusted earnings per share of $4.74 on revenue of $90.01 billion, beating consensus estimates. Turrin maintained his Overweight rating, arguing Microsoft's enterprise AI leadership and corporate software dominance justify a premium valuation. The target implies roughly 39% upside from the current stock price of $503.81. The average analyst target across 35 firms sits at $562.

CB&I upsizes senior secured credit facility to $625M following Asset Solutions acquisition

CB&I, a provider of integrated storage and asset-management solutions, has closed an upsized senior secured credit facility of $625 million, up from $400 million. The expanded facility comprises a $500 million revolving credit facility and a new $125 million Term Loan A, both maturing on 4 December 2028. The additional capacity replenishes cash used to acquire Asset Solutions, previously part of the Petrofac Group, and enhances financial flexibility for future investments. The revolving credit facility remains undrawn at closing, with CB&I having no funded debt outstanding. Citibank led the syndication, which added Goldman Sachs Bank USA and Zions Bancorporation to the lending group. Existing lenders include Truist Securities, National Bank of Canada, Webster Bank, Texas Capital Bank, Crédit Agricole CIB, Wells Fargo, and J.P. Morgan.

Orange EV secures $100M credit facility with Wells Fargo to fuel yard electrification growth

Orange EV, a US manufacturer of zero-emissions terminal trucks, has secured a $100 million revolving credit facility led by Wells Fargo Bank. The senior secured facility will strengthen the company's balance sheet and provide liquidity for working capital, expansion of its OptiGrid subsidiary, and growth of its rental and leasing platform. OptiGrid develops battery-integrated fast charging solutions that enable rapid deployment of charging infrastructure without costly utility upgrades. The technology can compress deployment timelines from months or years to days or weeks. CEO Kurt Neutgens said the company is on track for one in four new yard trucks purchased or leased to be an Orange EV vehicle. The firm has tripled production and recently deployed its 2,000th electric terminal truck, with a recent order for 600 units.
