Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or the physical sciences is required.
  • Three to five years of clinical laboratory experience are required.
  • A New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License is required.
Responsibilities
  • Accurately identify patient specimens using two identifiers, follow the specimen rejection policy, and document, investigate, and resolve rejected specimens.
  • Perform and document scheduled quality control and equipment maintenance, including cleaning, calibration, and humidity and temperature monitoring.
  • Perform routine and STAT testing accurately according to policy and within established turnaround times.
  • Notify the Supervisor and Lead Technologist of instrumentation and laboratory information system issues, and contact the help desk for computer system problems such as Epic.
  • Follow mandatory infection prevention practices.
  • Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments; reject unacceptable specimens; and accurately record and document results and telephone reports.
  • Review daily quality control and workload, complete reports within required time frames, and document equipment maintenance.
  • Take and document corrective action for out-of-control situations and keep the Supervisor informed of section problems.
  • Review and verify abnormal results and critical values.
  • Handle inquiries from Medical Staff about the Laboratory according to department policy and report them to the Supervisor.
  • Coordinate continuing education and training for students and employees.
  • Assist the Supervisor with employee competency documentation and personnel performance evaluations.
  • Assist the Supervisor in ensuring the section meets standards established by governing agencies, including the Department of Health, Joint Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and American Association of Blood Banks.
  • Assume the Supervisor’s responsibilities when the Supervisor is absent and keep the Administrative Director informed of laboratory status.
  • Order supplies and maintain complete inventory according to section protocol.
  • Coordinate the performance, distribution, and response of proficiency tests, including New York State and Wadsworth Center tests.
  • Perform supervisor-approved special studies or Institutional Review Board projects.
  • Assist in evaluating new methods and equipment, including cost and method analysis.
  • Complete assigned duties, goals, and projects in a timely manner.
  • Participate in department problem-solving, improvement, change initiatives, and service-excellence activities.
  • Comply with hospital, corporate compliance, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, Joint Commission, and other regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Meet attendance, punctuality, mandatory education, and hospital-required health-screening requirements.
  • Identify and communicate safety and risk issues to the department director and perform job functions within the department’s safety culture.
  • Promote teamwork and collaboration.
