VEIR develops superconducting power transmission lines using high-temperature superconductors and ambient-air cooling to carry significantly more electricity in a smaller footprint. The lines can transmit 5 to 10 times more power than conventional cables, enabling dense urban grids and easier integration of renewables, data centers, and other high-demand facilities. It works by HTS materials reducing electrical resistance and an air-cooled system that maintains superconductivity without bulky cryogenics. The goal is to expand grid capacity with scalable, cost-efficient, and reliable infrastructure for urban loads and regional upgrades, differentiating itself with compact, air-cooled HTS cables.

What believers are saying

  • Raised $75M Series B in 2025 led by Munich Re for AI data centers and grid resilience.
  • Microsoft pilots 3 MW low-voltage product in 2026 ahead of 2027 commercial launch.
  • ARPA-E funds 10kV DC lines for 400 MW bulk power transfer from renewables to grid.

What critics are saying

  • HTS cooling fails under weather variability, delaying 2026 pilot and eroding confidence.
  • SuperPower scales cheaper underground HTS cables, undercutting VEIR in utility bids by 2028.
  • Furukawa Electric floods market with 30% cheaper HTS tapes, zeroing VEIR margins by 2029.

What makes Veir unique

  • VEIR uses passive evaporative cryogenic cooling for HTS lines, delivering 20x cooling power per kilogram nitrogen.
  • Overhead superconductors carry 5-10x more power than conventional lines in same footprint.
  • Proprietary system enables 400 MW transmission at 69 kV using existing rights-of-way.

Microsoft Eyes HTS Tech for Efficient Data Centers

Microsoft eyes HTS tech for efficient data centers. February 12, 2026 Microsoft is exploring advanced high-temperature superconductors (HTS) as a potential game-changer for power efficiency in their data centers. These superconductors offer the promise of nearly lossless power delivery due to their ability to eliminate electrical resistance when maintained at cryogenic temperatures. Unlike conventional copper or aluminum wires, HTS can carry higher power densities without the accompanying heat losses. Alistair Speirs, General Manager of Azure infrastructure, highlighted the potential benefits of HTS systems, noting their ability to overcome the constraints of traditional power systems which require extensive infrastructure expansions. By reducing the spatial footprint needed for power distribution, HTS technology could lead to more compact and environmentally friendly data centers. Currently, Microsoft's investment in HTS is still in the early stages, as the cost and availability of superconducting materials present challenges. Microsoft has partnered with Veir, an HTS power delivery firm, which demonstrated promising results with a 3-megawatt transmission in a simulated environment. However, commercial deployment remains a distant goal. While the technology holds potential for a paradigm shift in data center power management, Speirs cautions that further testing and validation are needed to build confidence in HTS systems. Although Microsoft remains optimistic about future implementation, widespread commercial application is not expected any time soon. Thinking about your next software development? Perovskite Solar Cells On Glass: Another Reason Why Fossil Fuels Are Toast

Perovskite solar cells have been tantalizing photovoltaic innovators since the early years of the 21st century. The perovskite promise of more power for less cost will help kick fossil fuels out of the picture, but getting the finicky material to behave has been a next-level challenge. Nevertheless, solutions are beginning to emerge, and one of them involves a centuries-old tried and true material — glass. The Promise Of Perovskite Solar CellsFor those of you new to the topic, perovskite (CaTiO3) is a naturally occurring calcium titanium oxide mineral, first identified in the 19th century. It lay about for the 20th century until researchers learned how to reproduce its structure in the lab, yielding synthetic perovksite solar cells at a relatively low cost (more CleanTechnica coverage is here). When disposed in a solution, perovskite solar materials lend themselves to low cost manufacturing processes. They can be painted, printed, sprayed or squirted as a thin film on different surfaces, including flexible ones.“In addition to being relatively inexpensive, the lab-grown factor can help to skirt silicon supply chain issues,” we noted earlier this year. “Perovskite solar cells lend themselves to low cost, fast throughput, high volume manufacturing processes

Veir Energizes First-Of-Its-Kind Outdoor Demo Of New Transmission Technology To Modernize Electric Power Grid, Increase Access To Renewable Energy

VEIR Energizes First-of-its-Kind Outdoor Demo of New Transmission Technology to Modernize Electric Power Grid, Increase Access to Renewable Energy. VEIR also raises $24.9 million in series A-2 funding. WOBURN, Mass., July 27, 2023-- VEIR, a clean technology company, today announced it has completed and energized a 100-foot overhead superconductor power line with a novel cooling approach that will help meet the global need for new power transmission. This technical milestone coincides with the company securing an additional $24.9 million in series A-2 funding from investors including Breakthrough Energy Ventures, The Engine Fund, Congruent Ventures, Fine Structure Ventures, Galvanize Climate Solutions, and VXI Capital.A significant expansion of energy transmission is critical to addressing the urgent and worsening global climate crisis. In fact, major studies indicate that the United States must double or triple the transmission capacity needed to connect more renewable energy to the electric grid and combat climate change.VEIR's technology provides a solution to help modernize the electric power grid, a critical need in meeting global clean energy goals. As new transmission lines become necessary, VEIR's new superconductors will increase transmission of 5-10x more energy than the current grid, using existing rights of way and easing siting and permitting reviews for developers."As we work to rapidly accelerate transmission capacity and curb global greenhouse gas emissions, this outdoor demonstration validates our technology's ability to deliver more energy in a more efficient manner," said Tim Heidel, CEO of VEIR
