Requirements
  • Active membership in good standing with the Virginia State Bar and eligibility to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Admission to practice before the Court of Appeals of Virginia and the Supreme Court of Virginia.
  • For applicable higher attorney levels, admission to practice before the Federal District Court.
  • For applicable higher attorney levels, two years of criminal-prosecutor experience, or one year of criminal-prosecutor experience plus two additional years of general-practice law experience.
  • For the Associate Commonwealth's Attorney level, five years of criminal-prosecutor experience, or four years of criminal-prosecutor experience plus two additional years of general-practice law experience.
  • For the Senior Attorney level, fifteen years of attorney experience, including at least ten years in criminal prosecution.
  • Successful completion of the Virginia Bar Exam within the prescribed timeframe when hired as a Law Fellow or under a contingent bar-exam offer.
  • Ability to work hours beyond the normal schedule in response to short-term department needs or city-wide emergencies.
  • Criminal law, criminal prosecutions, document drafting, jury trials, legal research, prosecutions, and witness interviewing.
Responsibilities
  • Prosecute misdemeanor and felony cases in Circuit and District Courts.
  • Conduct legal research and interview witnesses.
  • Negotiate with defense counsel.
  • Prepare jury instructions and present cases at trial.
  • Prepare legal briefs and memoranda of law.
  • Establish effective relationships with office personnel, judicial agencies, victims and witnesses, law enforcement officers, and the public.
  • Maintain accurate files and document major or significant actions in writing with sufficient justification to support recommendations.
  • Prepare briefs opposing petitions for appeals to the Court of Appeals.
  • Perform individual assignments determined by the supervisor based on workload and department needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior experience in criminal law.
  • Prior prosecution experience.
  • Prior jury experience, including at least five jury trials for the Senior Assistant level or at least twenty jury trials for the Associate and Senior Attorney levels.
  • Experience with body-worn-camera or other digital evidence.
  • Completion of a post-law-school Trial Advocacy Course.
