Requirements
  • Basic keyboarding skills for a highly computerized laboratory environment.
  • Ability to verify patient demographic information against test order requisitions.
  • Ability to verify specimen acceptability and follow laboratory protocols for unacceptable specimens.
  • Ability to identify specimens shared with other laboratory departments and follow interdepartmental procedures.
  • Ability to package specimens for transport according to International Air Transport Association guidelines and established laboratory protocols.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and protect sensitive and HIPAA Protected Health Information in accordance with applicable Albany Med Health System policies and Federal and New York State statutes.
Responsibilities
  • Receive specimens and verify specimen identification.
  • Verify information on written requests and transfer it into the computer system.
  • Send specimens to the appropriate testing areas.
  • Retrieve laboratory data and reports and assist authorized personnel.
  • Keep the surrounding area clean and organized.
  • Use computer systems to perform inquiries, order tests, transcribe results, and generate billing documents, worksheets, and reports according to standard laboratory practices.
  • Communicate with nursing staff, physicians, and other hospital departments.
  • Consult the supervising technologist or laboratory services directory when necessary.
  • Accession test requests into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Assist with maintaining, ordering, and restocking supplies.
  • Contact health care providers or customers to clarify unclear requests.
  • Fill client services supply orders.
