Requirements
  • Strong Rust experience, or serious C++ and systems experience combined with clear curiosity to learn Rust.
  • Solid systems fundamentals including memory, performance, and concurrency, with experience profiling and improving slow software.
  • A track record of building non-trivial software from scratch and explaining it end to end.
  • A portfolio, such as GitHub, is required.
Responsibilities
  • Own major application features from design through shipping across the full stack in Rust.
  • Build deeply interactive, low-latency editing tools involving algorithms and computational geometry.
  • Develop a document model that supports diffing, merging, and real-time collaboration.
  • Build the synchronization engine for streaming edits between clients with eventual consistency, high-bandwidth streaming, and correctness.
  • Develop a GPU canvas that renders millions of polygons smoothly using spatial indexing, culling, and level of detail in a shared Rust code path for web and native.
  • Build interactive simulation experiences with streaming waveforms and responsive analysis.
  • Contribute to the plugin system, scripting API, and integrations that send finished designs to the fabrication facility.
Desired Qualifications
  • Game, engine, or real-time systems experience, including entity-component systems, scene graphs, spatial indexing, physics engines, frame budgets, graphical user interfaces, or low-latency input.
  • Electrical engineering experience, including analog and digital concepts.
  • Experience with deep, complex software such as Blender, Ableton, KiCad, computer-aided design tools, digital audio workstations, or game engines.
  • Distributed or real-time systems experience, including write-ahead logs, event sourcing, replication, conflict-free replicated data types, operational transformation, WebSockets, or data pipelines.
  • Experience with geometry, graph, and routing algorithms, spatial data structures, or optimization.
  • Familiarity with schema evolution and serialization formats such as Protocol Buffers, FlatBuffers, or Cap'n Proto.
  • Graphics and visualization experience, including custom rendering, shaders, and GPU pipelines such as WebGPU, Vulkan, or OpenGL.
  • Interest in how version control works internally, beyond using Git.
  • Experience drawing schematics, running SPICE, or building resistor-capacitor-inductor circuits.

fab2 builds a software-defined semiconductor manufacturing platform. It designs and manufactures the hardware, software, and process technology needed to produce chips, including its own fabrication facilities, lithography equipment, and automation systems. Its Lockhart, Texas fab is meant to supply the tools and infrastructure to scale chip production, while its Austin and San Francisco facilities support development. fab2 is also developing Studio, a browser-based collaborative electronic design automation (EDA) environment for chip design. The company aims to enable scalable, accessible chip manufacturing and collaborative chip design by providing an integrated stack of hardware, software, process technology, and design tools.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Fab2 reported a $500 million Series A on September 9, 2026.
  • The company expanded to Austin and Lockhart, showing capital-intensive execution momentum.
  • Texas hiring and a 120,000-square-foot Austin site support faster hiring and production scaling.

What critics are saying

  • Electron-beam lithography slows throughput versus EUV, limiting commercial scale after 2026.
  • Fab2 has no disclosed revenue, yields, customer deployments, or verified process-node roadmap.
  • If Lockhart fails to mass-produce fabs cheaply, the whole recursive manufacturing thesis collapses.

What makes Fab2 unique

  • Jim Keller and Sam Zeloof combine elite chip design with garage-fab credibility.
  • Fab2's July 2026 Texas rebrand centers on a vertically integrated 'fab fab' model.
  • Studio unifies layout, schematic, and simulation inside browser-based collaborative EDA.
