Requirements
  • A PhD in Robotics, Machine Learning, or a closely related field, completed or near completion.
  • A proven track record of deploying learning-based controllers on real robotic hardware.
  • Expert-level knowledge of reinforcement learning.
  • Expert-level knowledge of physics-based simulation, such as Isaac Gym/Lab or MuJoCo, or equivalent.
  • Expert-level knowledge of Python and PyTorch, including training large-scale neural networks.
  • Deep expertise in at least two of the following areas: diffusion models; flow matching; dexterous manipulation; sim-to-real transfer and real-to-sim calibration; whole-body control and loco-manipulation; synthetic data generation for robot learning; vision language model fine-tuning using supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning; transformer-based 3D scene understanding.
Responsibilities
  • Drive original research in learning-based robotics from concept through hardware deployment.
  • Define research problems, design experiments, and iterate on research directions.
  • Collaborate directly with the Zurich research team across manipulation, motion generation, and perception.
  • Contribute to a culture of scientific rigor, velocity, and impact.

Flexion Robotics, a Swiss startup founded by former Nvidia researchers, has developed a system to train humanoid robots to perform complex office tasks autonomously. The company's approach combines multiple AI systems using reinforcement learning, teaching robots individual skills in simulation before deploying them in real-world settings. Unlike traditional methods relying on teleoperation, Flexion's software enables robots to execute multi-step commands independently. A demonstration shows a modified Unitree humanoid robot retrieving a parcel by navigating stairs and lifts, then unpacking items without human control. The system works by having a master AI model analyse videos of humans performing tasks, matching them with skills learned in simulation. According to CEO Nikita Rudin, the technology's key innovation is its extensive use of reinforcement learning across all software layers, from high-level planning to motor control.

Wenger Vieli has advised Redalpine on its co-investment in Flexion Robotics, a Zurich-based company developing intelligence systems for humanoid and industrial robots. The startup raised $50 million in a Series A round led by DST Global, with participation from nVentures (NVIDIA's venture arm), Prosus Ventures, Moonfire and Redalpine. Flexion Robotics is building adaptive, real-world intelligence for robots through reinforcement learning, advanced simulation and sim-to-real training. The technology aims to enable robots to generalise across different tasks, environments and form factors. The Wenger Vieli team was led by partner Beat Speck and included associate Fabienne Nufer and junior lawyer Giulia Meyer, advising on all Swiss legal aspects of the financing round.
