Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated development engineer with business development experience to focus on (i) business development efforts, building and maintaining strategic partnerships with industry leaders to accelerate the adoption and impact of the institute's innovations, and
(ii) building and maintaining machine learning (ML) software and pipelines that power digital health innovations.

Ideal Candidate Statement:

The ideal candidate will have strong software engineering fundamentals, project management experience, and a passion for healthcare impact. The Digital Health Product Specialist plays a key role in the creation and management of digital health products, focusing on the features, functionality, and user experience of technologies like virtual care platforms, mobile health apps, and software-as-a-medical-device (SaMD). They collaborate with various teams, conduct user research, and oversee the product lifecycle to ensure high-quality, secure, and user-friendly digital solutions that improve patient outcomes and healthcare accessibility.

Workplace Requirements:
On-campus position: This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in person. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.

Hiring Range: $95,900 - $122,400
*Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime. 

This position is funded by a grant, soft, and/or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of funding.

Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree
• 2+ years of experience in digital health commercialization and business development with industry partners
  • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

Skills:

• Strong programming skills in Python and ML frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn)
• Familiarity with version control (Git) and collaborative development
• Working with potential customers on product specifications
• Managing timelines
• Ensuring successful delivery
• A proven track record of industry experience in digital health and commercialization is essential, with the ability to translate research discoveries into commercially viable products and services for patient care

Preferences:

• Master’s in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
• Lead collaborations with external partners, including industry, academic institutions, and healthcare providers, to further enhance the development and implementation of data-driven healthcare solutions
• Experience with data pipelines (e.g., Airflow, Prefect, Luigi) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Understanding of CI/CD workflows, containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
• Experience in digital health, medical data, or regulated environments
• Knowledge of healthcare data formats (HL7, FHIR, DICOM)
• Background in signal processing, time-series, or imaging data
• Experience deploying ML in clinical/research settings
• Manage complex research projects, including timelines, deliverables, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders
• Seek and support the development of new research grants by contributing to proposal writing and identifying funding opportunities

Essential Functions:

• Design, build, and maintain end-to-end ML pipelines for data ingestion, preprocessing, training, validation, and deployment
• Collaborate with data scientists, clinicians, and engineers to translate research models into scalable production systems
• Develop APIs, microservices, and cloud-based deployment frameworks to support ML applications
• Ensure reproducibility, scalability, and compliance with healthcare data standards (HIPAA, FDA guidance)
• Ability to analyze the Digital Health Institute research portfolio and identify and develop translational opportunities for digital health products and services that can be brought to market
