OverviewWe’re looking for a Technical Writer II to join the team that creates GitHub Docs (docs.github.com).
In this role, you’ll report to a Docs Manager and work cooperatively with product teams, content designers, and other technical writers to research, design, write, publish, and maintain user-focused technical documentation. You’ll develop a range of content from getting-started guides to in-depth documentation on technical workflows, informed by customers’ needs and goals.
You’ll focus on documentation for our Driver persona— users who support the work of software developers in their company or team by making changes to GitHub at scale. You’ll also build an understanding of GitHub’s other personas, and of the GitHub platform and its component products, including GitHub Copilot.
This job may be a good fit for you if you are keen to put yourself in the user’s position and address their needs and pain points alongside business needs and goals. You are curious, eager to incorporate new ideas, test hypotheses, and continually grow and learn. And you are an adept collaborator, ready to give and receive thoughtful reviews for strategy, substance, and style.
The Docs team is highly distributed and embraces an environment of asynchronous work. You’ll need strong communication skills and the ability to build working relationships with coworkers in locations around the globe.
ResponsibilitiesWith guidance, plan, research, design, write, publish, and maintain documentation content that meets user needs, company goals, and Docs standards.
Develop technical expertise in the GitHub product, and collaborate with subject matter experts to define content opportunities and ensure documentation is technically accurate.
Assess effectiveness of new and existing content based on metrics, user feedback, and research with Docs personas; propose and execute improvements.
Learn GitHub’s tools, systems, and processes for content authoring, publishing, and review; participate regularly in giving and receiving peer reviews.
Participate in the GitHub content community of practice to develop skills for user-centered content, and help others build them.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
- 3+ years experience in writing, content design, content strategy, UX design, information technology (IT), coding/programming, or related field
- OR Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, English, Writing, Journalism, Communications, or related field AND
- 1+ year(s) experience in writing, content design, content strategy, UX design, information technology, coding/programming, or related field OR equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated interest in software development, technical writing, or software documentation.
Compensation RangeThe base salary range for this job is USD $53,000.00 - USD $140,500.00 /Yr.
These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual’s base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.
