Requirements
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Accounting is required.
  • Certification as a Certified Public Accountant is required.
  • At least 8 years of progressive experience in financial accounting, reporting, and audit is required.
  • Strong technical accounting and financial expertise is required, including the ability to initiate, review, track, and monitor financial transactions and requests through to completion.
  • Leadership, good judgment, and the ability to learn and communicate University policies to a variety of stakeholders are required.
  • Analytical, modeling, and dashboard experience is required, as well as experience writing fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills are required, including the ability to triage and escalate complex issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Great attention to detail is required.
  • A service-oriented, professional demeanor and team orientation are required.
  • The ability to think creatively to solve problems is required.
  • Strong time-management skills are required, with the ability to prioritize work and multitask to meet deadlines.
Responsibilities
  • Monitor the University's general ledger transactions efficiently and effectively.
  • Perform general ledger reviews, coordinate month-end close activities, review assigned financial statement line items, prepare for year-end audits, and complete special projects.
  • Reconcile complex University cash accounts.
  • Ensure compliance with internal accounting controls and verify account activity and balances for assigned financial statement line items.
  • Participate in the University's month-end and year-end financial close process, including accounting for complex transactions.
  • Review and reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts and prepare adjusting journal entries to ensure accurate reporting and ledger maintenance.
  • Monitor monthly financial reports, identify anomalies such as incorrect fund usage and transactions affecting revenue and expenses, and initiate corrections as necessary.
  • Review and approve journal entries and other ad hoc transactions.
  • Review University accounting processes and provide guidance regarding necessary policy updates.
  • Provide training as needed and assist with designing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure timely and accurate accounting for University activities.
  • Support other accounting activities across the General Accounting Office as needed.
  • Support staff across the campus community by providing guidance and resolving accounting issues and general financial administration inquiries.
  • Participate in unit, campus-wide, and University-wide financial meetings, task forces, and working groups as assigned.
  • Attend and participate in mandatory and recommended training and development opportunities.
  • Provide backup to other General Accounting Office team members as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Revenue and Receivables on the accounting treatment of cash receipts for billed revenue-generating agreements.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Revenue and Receivables regarding outstanding tuition cash transactions and electronic funds transfers for external scholarships.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Gift Administration regarding outstanding gift-related transactions.

  • Experience in a complex higher educational institution or not-for-profit organization is a plus.
