Requirements
  • Completion of 7th grade plus one year of experience in municipal public works maintenance, construction, or a comparable field, or an equivalent combination of experience and training providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must have a Virginia or North Carolina driver's license.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical.
  • Must work during inclement weather, including flooding, hurricanes, and snow.
  • Must be able to work hours in excess of the normal schedule in response to short-term department needs or city-wide emergencies.
  • Must wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment, such as steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment, when required.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position subject to mandatory drug testing.
Responsibilities
  • Occasionally operate light automotive equipment and specialized maintenance equipment, such as a concrete saw and pole saw.
  • Assist with closed-circuit television inspections of the city's stormwater drainage systems.
  • Assist in loading and unloading materials.
  • Assist with cleaning and maintaining stormwater drainage structures, including culverts, manholes, and concrete, metal, and plastic pipes.
  • Perform manual tasks to maintain drainage ditches and systems.
  • Perform minor repairs on equipment.
  • Carry tools, equipment, and supplies to and from job sites by truck or by hand.
  • Serve as a flagger to direct traffic around roadway construction.
