Requirements
  • An associate's degree in Medical Technology is required, or an associate's degree in a natural science or clinical laboratory science with coursework acceptable to the New York State Education Department.
  • A Clinical Laboratory Technician New York State license is required upon hire.
Responsibilities
  • Provide specialized testing and support for the laboratory section under the direction and supervision of laboratory leadership, with some latitude to work independently.
  • Perform complex technical assignments requiring theoretical insight, interpretation, skill, judgment, and understanding of laboratory science principles.
  • Maintain and standardize instruments, perform daily quality control, and adhere to hospital and laboratory policies.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with internal and external clients.
  • Perform and interpret routine Blood Bank tests, including ABO/Rh typing, direct and indirect antiglobulin tests, crossmatches, transfusion reaction workups, fetal screens, and Kleihauer-Betke stains.
  • Perform circulator duties, including logging in specimens, checking patient computer files, prioritizing and triaging work, preparing and issuing components, answering phones, and completing other miscellaneous tasks.
  • Rejuvenate, freeze, deglycerolize, wash, pool, and thaw specimens, and complete the corresponding paperwork.
  • Perform daily reagent quality control and participate in equipment quality control and preventative maintenance.
  • Perform serologic testing to assist in identifying antibodies using routine antibody panels and reference procedures, including enzymes, Synsorbs, absorptions and elutions, antibody titrations, antigen screening, and other specialized tests.
  • Interpret testing and identify specific antibodies performed by a technologist or supervisor.
  • Irradiate blood products.
  • Retype units received from other facilities, process and input products into inventory, monitor inventory levels for appropriateness, and order additional products when necessary.
  • Stock supplies, clean general laboratory areas, and answer phones when the designated individual is unable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
