Requirements
  • An associate degree as a Legal Assistant, completion of an American Bar Association-approved Legal Assistant training program, or extensive experience performing Legal Assistant functions is required.
  • Experience researching, analyzing, and preparing written documents and correspondence is required.
  • Knowledge of civil litigation procedure, federal and state judicial systems, claim procedures, principles of insurance, medical terminology, insurance defense practice, and insurance products and services is required.
  • Knowledge of composing and communicating board and executive management meeting agendas and notices, developing and distributing board calendars, developing, distributing and summarizing board surveys and regulatory reports, and maintaining electronic and paper corporate documents is required.
  • Ability to evaluate situations, facts, and issues and draw accurate conclusions is required.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and prioritize work is required.
  • Ability to research legal files and compile data is required.
  • Ability to competently operate a Windows-based personal computer and relevant software is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others in a work environment and with the public is required.
  • Ability to prepare written documents, correspondence, memoranda, and pleadings is required.
Responsibilities
  • Employ knowledge of company and legal procedures and principles of insurance, banking, or corporate law while assisting attorneys in the legal process necessary for conducting company business.
  • Review, analyze, and summarize issues involved in incoming litigation or administrative actions.
  • Determine the need for file documentation, obtain proofs, and clarify facts and issues.
  • Organize, assemble, and interpret records and documents.
  • Act as a resource to company personnel regarding corporate legal matters and departmental procedures.
  • Support litigation matters and act as a general litigation assistant throughout the pendency of lawsuits.
  • Research medical facts when necessary.
  • Type and generate pleadings, legal documents, related correspondence, memoranda, letters, and charts for assigned staff counsel.
  • Schedule and record appointment dates for attorney meetings, including depositions and court hearings, and maintain the appointment calendar.
  • Assemble data and provide input for implementing computerized research and litigation monitoring systems.
  • Assist in preparing a legal periodical for distribution to the Claims department.
  • Provide office administration support as needed, including mail processing, data input, courier activities, budget administration, payment processing, and notary services.
  • Interact directly with business-line customers and visitors to address support needs.
  • Establish and maintain files for each case or matter along with a corresponding electronic diary system.
  • Advise staff or management regarding items requiring attention or action.
  • Initiate, complete, and submit routine forms required by courts or regulatory entities.
  • Contact appropriate organizations as directed to obtain documents.
  • Manage correspondence for key dates and names, record pertinent information, and file it.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of Legal Assistant experience with personal injury litigation is preferred.
  • Knowledge of regulatory matters, including filing reports with regulatory agencies, is preferred.
  • Knowledge of company procedures and departmental functions is preferred.
