Requirements

  • The candidate must be able to travel within British Columbia to deliver community-based services.
  • An undergraduate degree or equivalent is required.
  • The candidate must be eligible for ACVREP Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist certification.
  • Good command of relevant computer applications is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • A current clean criminal record and vulnerable sector check are required.
  • The candidate must be willing to work flexible hours.
  • Travel is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assess the independent living needs and abilities of individuals.
  • Identify and prioritize goals with each individual and develop an independent living plan.
  • Teach adaptive skills for personal management, household management, communication, leisure activities, indoor orientation and mobility, and technology training.
  • Assist individuals in acquiring and using assistive devices.
  • Promote self-advocacy skills so individuals with vision loss can access community programs and resources.
  • Maintain case data and documentation in accordance with organizational systems and procedures.
  • Complete professional healthcare documentation, charting, and reporting.
  • Provide consultation, public education, and in-service training.
  • Perform administrative duties including service tracking, benchmarking, and report writing.
  • Maintain, facilitate, and conduct group sessions and presentations.
  • Liaise with community-based rehabilitation teams, agencies, schools, partners, health practitioners, and stakeholders.
  • Provide support and consultation to individuals and their families regarding adjustment to vision loss.
  • Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Promote understanding and awareness of vision-health-related issues through consultation, public education, and in-service training.
  • Assist with the training, placement, and supervision of volunteers and students.
  • Deliver services promptly so people with vision loss acquire skills and assistive technology to remain or regain independence.
  • Use creative and timely problem-solving to respond to unique individual needs.
  • Use standard procedures and processes to implement each individual's independent living plan.
  • Use judgment to determine whether an individual requires referral to another organizational service or an external service.
  • Keep current with knowledge in vision rehabilitation and independent living skills.
  • Facilitate and enhance team efforts by sharing specialized knowledge, sources, experience, concepts, and skills.
  • Provide leadership to community groups and partners by educating, advocating, and promoting awareness of vision loss.
  • Provide leadership in training and coaching volunteers, students, and staff.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduation from the Instructor for Blind and Visually Impaired Program at Mohawk College is an asset.
  • A Diploma in Specialized Studies, Orientation and Mobility and Vision Rehabilitation from the University of Montreal is an asset.
  • Experience running and facilitating groups is an asset.
