Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or a related field is required.
  • Seven to ten years of relevant finance, financial planning and analysis, or related experience is required.
  • Strong understanding of financial statements, gross margin, Cost of Goods Sold, budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis is required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required, including the ability to interpret complex financial and operational data, identify key drivers and trends, and translate findings into meaningful business insights.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required to communicate financial results, analysis, and insights to business partners and multiple levels of management.
  • The ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgment, and collaborate across Finance and cross-functional teams is required.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy, consistency, and data integrity is required.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint is required, along with experience using financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting systems.
  • The ability to identify and implement process improvements that enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness of financial analysis and reporting is required.
  • Experience using AI-enabled tools to accelerate variance analysis, identify margin drivers, or streamline recurring reporting and forecasting tasks is required.
  • The ability to evaluate AI-generated output, including draft commentary, forecast scenarios, or variance explanations, for accuracy and business context before incorporating it into decision-making materials is required.
Responsibilities
  • Own monthly gross margin reporting and analysis across Barnes & Noble Education and its family of brands, providing commentary on performance and identifying drivers, trends, risks, and opportunities relative to budget, forecast, and prior year.
  • Develop the detailed Cost of Goods Sold budget, including store-, division-, product-category-, and monthly-level assumptions, by partnering with Merchandising and other business partners to gather, challenge, and validate inputs.
  • Develop quarterly gross margin projections using actual performance, current trends, and evolving business assumptions, and communicate changes, risks, and opportunities in the outlook.
  • Support the accuracy and integrity of gross margin results during the monthly close process by validating gross margin, inventory, Cost of Goods Sold, and related financial data and resolving significant variances or discrepancies.
  • Serve as the FP&A subject-matter expert for gross margin, including internal and external margin definitions, methodologies, calculations, and performance, and provide guidance on margin-related questions.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in the Stock Ledger and its role in calculating inventory and gross margin, using that knowledge to support financial analysis, investigate issues, and improve understanding of margin performance.
  • Prepare and communicate gross margin analysis for the Board of Directors, senior leadership, field management, and store management, tailoring detail and commentary to each audience.
  • Provide detailed Cost of Goods Sold, pricing, and margin analytics for Logo Products and First Day Complete, identifying performance drivers and supporting business decisions.
  • Drive continuous improvement in gross margin reporting, forecasting, budgeting, and analytical processes, including the application of AI-enabled tools and automation.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required.

Barnes & Noble Education stock jumps 20% on surprise profit and new dividend

Barnes & Noble Education shares jumped 19.7% on Thursday following a mixed preliminary Q4 2026 earnings report and dividend announcement. The company expects approximately $263 million in revenues, below the $295 million analyst consensus and down from $278.3 million year-on-year. However, adjusted profits are projected at least $0.05 per share, beating the expected $0.16 loss. The board initiated a dividend programme with a first payout of $0.08 per share on 30 July, yielding 2.4% annually.
