Requirements
  • An Associate's degree in a related field and 1 year of experience as a Clinical Laboratory Support Technician II, or 2 years of related work experience in a health care setting, including other laboratory divisions such as Client Services, Phlebotomy, or Clinical Trials; an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
  • Ability to prioritize and maintain focus while performing multiple tasks.
  • Understanding of specimen preparation, requirements, and equipment operations.
  • Ability to interpret requisitions and physicians' scripts.
  • Professional discretion with confidential patient results.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to laboratory safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of the terminology and common procedures and practices of a technical field.
  • Proficiency with multiple hospital and laboratory information systems, including the Electronic Medical Record System, Laboratory Information System, Pre-Analytical Automation Control Unit, and Middleware.
Responsibilities
  • Perform technical assignments involving sequences of related operations, follow written procedures, and ensure appropriate practices are followed.
  • Identify and process specimens while maintaining specimen integrity for laboratory testing.
  • Travel between testing locations as needed.
  • Enter patient demographic, insurance, and other required information accurately into the electronic medical record.
  • Log patient and test information from requisitions into the Laboratory Information System and verify that acceptance criteria are met using the UR Medicine Labs Test Menu.
  • Receive pre-accessioned specimens, reconcile batch manifests, account for specimens, identify specimen requirements, and document discrepancies or unacceptable criteria in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Identify specialized testing requests and prioritize specimens to meet requested turnaround times; receive and triage samples through the chute or drop-off window.
  • Prepare specimens, determine stability and volume, perform centrifugation when needed, and use appropriate aliquoting techniques to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Distribute specimens to the appropriate department for prompt analysis.
  • Perform specialized departmental assignments and studies; document preventive maintenance; troubleshoot and maintain automation; resolve billing problems; handle samples for interfaced laboratories; create electronic manifests; prepare and batch specimens at appropriate temperatures; and ensure required forms and documentation accompany specimens for non-interfaced clients.
  • Process irretrievable tissues, determine source codes, enter accurate critical accessioning data, support the operating room with specimen retrieval and an eight-point quality assurance check, ensure specimen acceptability criteria, load analyzers, and troubleshoot and resolve problems.
  • Train new or less experienced staff, conduct cross-training in technical areas, complete training and sign-off materials, suggest work improvements, assist with updating procedures for regulatory inspections, and participate in employee competency review and assessment.
  • Act as a point person for shift issues and weekend rotations, investigate equipment malfunctions, document issues, and function as Tech in Charge for specific shift assignments as needed.
  • Receive and route phone inquiries from providers, physicians, customers, and internal laboratory personnel; investigate problem specimens and document complaints, specimen requests, and specimen integrity issues.
  • Keep the laboratory orderly and clean to maintain a safe work environment and quality of work.
